Wife-killer leads cops to body in deal with D.A. (Hans Reiser in the Bay Area)
Source: San Francisco Chronicle

Convicted killer Hans Reiser led police Monday to what he said was the body of his wife in the Oakland hills just two days before he was to be sentenced for first-degree murder, authorities said.

Reiser, who had proclaimed his innocence from the day his estranged wife, Nina, was last seen in September 2006, agreed to reveal the location of her body in exchange for a deal in which he would be sentenced for second-degree murder rather than the first-degree murder conviction a jury returned against him in April, according to officials with knowledge of the case.

Reiser also acknowledged that he and his wife had fought and that he had strangled her, a source familiar with the investigation said.

The maximum sentence Reiser could receive for second-degree murder is 15 years to life. Reiser had faced a term of 25 years to life under his first-degree murder conviction.

Dude... I guess we all knew he was totally guilty, but this is a bit of a shock.

10. This is why we need the death penalty. In 15 years (hell maybe
sooner) he'll get out to murder the next one. I may puke.

3. How about this for a deal
He sat on the stand for 11 days lying about killing his wife, the prosecuter should say "oh we lied about that 2nd degree murder charge too." Sorry, sue us.

5. I wonder if he
got protection from perjury charges.

Either way, this is somewhat good news- they have her body, she can be properly laid to rest and hopefully her family will have some kinda closure.

6. Clever Hans can't lose
He'll be "unable" to find the body ... proving that he really didn't do it.

The police will assume he's messing with them, and throw the book at him on the 1st degree murder charge. He'll get life.

Then, he'll appeal on several grounds, including malicious prosecution (I didn't do it, therefore how could I be rightfully convicted?) and a slew of civil rights complaints. (I was pressured to do this, pressured, I say!)

In about 2-3 years, he'll walk out of prison, a free man, exonerated, with an additional $10 million in his pockets, his winnings from several punitive tort lawsuits, ready to conquer the world of computing yet again.

The world will rue they day it crossed Hans Reiser!

The man is a genious.

9. He was already convicted
of 1st degree murder and awaiting sentencing. He lied throughout the trial saying he didn't do it.

He he's trying to work the system. 1st degree murder ia 25 - life. 2nd degree murder is 15 - life. He thinks he'll get out after 15 years by cooperating now. He won't. No parole board in the state of CA will ever let his sorry ass out of jail. Ever. He's in for the long haul.

The important thing is that the family now have the remains of their loved one. That's why the court went along with this. But Riesser will still spend his life in prison, regardless of what he thinks.
