Poll: Pet owners prefer McCain over Obama
Source: Associated Press

WASHINGTON (AP) — If the presidential election goes to the dogs, John McCain is looking like best in show.

From George Washington's foxhound Drunkard to George W. Bush's terriers Barney and Miss Beazley, pets are a longtime presidential tradition for which the presumed Republican nominee seems well prepared, with more than a dozen.

Democratic candidate Barack Obama, on the other hand, doesn't have a pet at home, although he has promised his daughters a dog after the election, win or lose.

The pet-owning public seems to have noticed the difference.

An AP-Yahoo News poll found that pet owners favor McCain over Obama 42 percent to 37 percent, with dog owners particularly in McCain's corner.

Oh Noes!!!! We are screwn!!! McInsane has sewn up the pet owner block!

What shall we call them? "Cat-Moms" "Doggie-Dads"????

Anyway, enjoy a chuckle out of this, I did.

11. Are John Sidney McCain III's "more than a dozen" pets scattered among his seven estates?
So he's "well prepared" for the pet contest is he? At least he's ready for something.
Unless he'll need someone to whisper the names of his pets into his ears when he's at some of the estates he visits less often.

Might have to keep that one in mind.

Lincoln's dog was Fido, which you never hear used anymore. Drunkard and Fido would be cool names for a pair of dogs, with a great history. I'll remember that.

16. Dog ownership is associated with higher income
It's also correlated with having children in the home:

"They found that for men: being married, living with children, being Midwestern and non-urban increased odds of living with a pet, and for women: being white, having a high income, living with children and living in a rural setting increased odds of pet ownership."

Let's see: non-urban whites with high incomes. The sounds like the squirearchy to me. They are not going to vote for Obama anyway.

It just so happens that the things that correlate with pet ownership also correlate with being Republican. There's nothing causal here, except that Republicanism and pet ownership correlate with the same socioeconomic variables. They looked as a few variables but apparently didn't ask about education and income! They would have to control for income to see if there was any independent effect, which they didn't do, because they are journalists, not political scientists or sociologists. I'm sure they have the software to run some regressions--they apparently don't think that's important.

47. Obama had a cat when he was a bachelor in Chicago - a pretty grey one!
I think it says something special when a single guy gets his own cat :-)

I remember reading about him getting his first apartment in Chicago and he got a cat - I even saw a pic of young Obama in the apartment w/the pretty grey cat.

I cannot remember, for the life of me, if I read about his cat (whom his friends said he was very sweet to) in his book or a newspaper article, but I cannot find it anymore.

It must have been an article, because I distinctly remember seeing the picture of Obama w/the cat.

His later roommate also remarked on the cat.

Cats For Obama!

30. Lawsuit: Katrina Pets Executed
Source: ABC News

For nearly two years, pet owners from the low-lying Louisiana parish of St. Bernard have accused sheriff's deputies of having wantonly killed dozens of dogs they forced evacuees to leave behind during Hurricane Katrina in 2005, without regard to the dogs' size or the potential threat they might pose.

One owner said her family was forced at gunpoint to leave its dog behind. Another owner said residents became frantic when, they said, they overheard one deputy claim that "once everybody's gone, we're going to have target practice tonight." They claim in court papers that deputies were under orders to shoot every dog they found.

Two deputies have already been indicted by a grand jury in New Orleans on charges of felony, aggravated cruelty to animals. The Louisiana attorney general's office is investigating and this morning lawyers for a group of owners will file a comprehensive complaint in federal court in Louisiana seeking class action status for their clients.

For the first time, the St. Bernard Parish sheriff's office has acknowledged to ABC News' Law & Justice Unit that an internal investigation has been launched.

41. Cat people tend to be more liberal than dog people (yes, gross generalization, but holds up, IMO).
I know, I know, there are plenty of dog people here on DU, etc., but ...

Cat-hating men tend to be insecure about their masculinity, in my view. They need an animal slobbering and fawning over them. This profile fits lots of Freepers.

Men who love cats are the coolest.

49. I agree. And when a cat loves a man, THAT man is the coolest - like my hubby!
Cats of all stripes LOVE my husband!
Stray cats, male & female both, immediately approach him, rub up against him, talk to him and follow him. They will even ignore me for him and I know all the secret kitty sounds!
Of course, our girl kitty at home adores him and lays in his arm like a cradled baby - she would never let me hold her like that.

If cats like a man, that says something inherently good about that man, IMHO.
