Army medic made famous in Iraq photo dies

PINEHURST, N.C. - A former Army medic made famous by a photograph that showed him carrying an injured Iraqi boy during the first week of the war in March 2003 has died of an apparent overdose, police said.

The photograph of Joseph Patrick Dwyer running to a makeshift military hospital while cradling the boy appeared in newspapers, magazines and television broadcasts worldwide.

Dwyer died late last month at a hospital in Pinehurst, according to the Boles Funeral Home. He was 31.

After the photo was published, Dwyer laughed when a reporter told him of its widespread circulation and tried to deflect focus to his entire unit. His mother, Maureen, said then that the photo embarrassed her son because it singled him out while other soldiers were doing the same thing.

I hope you're happy, Mr. Bush. I hope you and all your friends are happy.

May you all rot in hell.

2. Oh, I'm sure Bush and his friends are happy.
Joseph Patrick Dwyer wasn't one of theirs, so they have no reason to be sad.

RIP Joseph Dwyer. May his friends and family find peace.

and fucked up. These Vets are NOT getting the support they need, and our lovely government is playing games with their funding. I could just cry.

6. Yeah, "support the troops" indeed
Busheviks only use that phrase to stifle dissent.

4. We had a GM
We had a GM that was actually an excellent leader and manager. Except he adored Bush. I think when we first occupied Iraq, the GM printed the pic of this guy being all heroic to the brown kid, which I perceived as war monger propaganda that glowed like a right wing bat call: "we're doing so much good. God, these Iraqi's really gotta love the USA now!

I really really remember this pic, but knew nothing of the story behind it. Another senseless waste of a good young American.

5. SO sad
that we all lost a soldier to Bush/Cheney's war for oil. I can't begin to understand the pain this young man was in due to this illegal war. May the designers of this war all rot in hell.
