Iranian shelling reported in northern Iraq
Source: CNN

BAGHDAD, Iraq (CNN) -- Iranian artillery shells rained down on villages in northern Iraq Wednesday where Kurdish rebels were thought to be operating.

A security official with Iraq's Kurdish Regional Government in Sulaimaniya confirmed the information.

The early-morning shelling hit border villages in Qandil mountains area in Sulaimaniya province and there were no reports of casualties.

Authorities say the Party of Free Life of Kurdistan is based in the region.

2. Really?
This is coming from CNN (corporate news network).

Is this really true? Or is this a ruse to further justify governor Bush's hard-on for bombing Iran?

4. border villages
I'm not defending the situation - just querying the exact locality which may be in a disputed border area. Would also be interesting to know what preciptated the event.

9. PJAK forces attacked into Iran on the 7th
And some of them fled back across into the Qandil Mountains of northern Iraq, as they do. The Iranians usually give them a good send-off with artillery. These PJAK 'villages' are actually PKK base camps, since PJAK is the Iranian arm of the PKK. There are virtually no non-combatants in these villages due to PKK's policy of keeping their families well away from their bases.

10. Iranian shells, or Turkish shells?
Since currently Turkey is shelling the fuck out of Northern Iraq and has been for months.

But Turkey is the US regime's "ally" and "friend", so that makes it ok.

It's the hypocrisy, stupid.

12. Iran's done it a time or two in the last year.
For the same reasons Turkey does. Different groups involved.

13. PJAK is a wholly-owned subsidiary of PKK
So effectively the same group. In fact as far as I know the PJAK commander is a senior PKK officer who's not even an Iranian Kurd.

15. Unless they cleared it Like the Turks counterbattery
fire is a potential response. Radar can trace artillery and drop counter battery on the guns that fired it.

Not a great time to be pulling this shit.

16. meh, they have been doing this for over 2 years...
I reported this via a friend, in about 2006, that is station over there and I was met with nothing but skepticism at the time here on DU.

moron* pisses and moans about fictional nukes but because our best buddy turkey who didn't allow the US to stage troops there in the run up to the war or allow US war planes to have fly overs, is now basically committing genocide against the kurds, moron* looks the other way and yet when Iran does it, you know those guys who are part of his* "axis of evil" shell, not a peep out of the state dept. funny how that works, huh? Can't stir up the pot now, can we? When freedom and peace in Iraq is sooooo close at hand now?
