Pelosi Says House Judiciary May Hold Hearings On Kucinich Impeachment Resolution
Source: CBS News/Politico

(The Politico) Speaker Nancy Pelosi (D-Calif.) said this morning that the House Judiciary Committee may hold hearings on an impeachment resolution offered by Rep. Dennis Kucinich (D-Ohio).

Kucinich is expected to offer a "privileged resolution" this afternoon calling on the House to look at whether President Bush should be removed from office for lying to Congress and the American public when he sought congressional approval back in 2002 for taking military action to invade Iraq and overthrow Saddam Hussein.

Pelosi has said previously that impeachment "was off the table," so her comments this morning were surprising, and clearly signaled a new willingness to entertain the idea of ousting Bush, although no one in the Democratic leadership believes that is likely since the president has only six months left in this term.

"This is a Judiciary Committee matter, and I believe we will some attention being paid to it by the Judiciary Committee," Pelosi told reporters. "Not necessarily taking up the articles of impeachment because that would have to be approved on the floor, but to have some hearings on the subject."

Pelosi added: "My expectation is that there will be some review of that in the committee."

She's probably getting heat for the impeachment and FISA issue. So now she's backtracking.

I also think it's telling that now that FISA is out of the impeachment charge, she will allow it. Translation ... Pelosi knew about wireless wiretapping and let it slide. The wiretapping charge in the previous round of impeachment counts threatened Pelosi so she blocked them all.

All I can think is "what the hell happened?" Why is she loosening the strings that bound now? Because the hearings might carry us to the election and won't bode well for the pugs? This article raises tons of questions..I hope some answers are forthcoming.

They didn't cover the 2004 Presidential Recount in Ohio. It was as if it wasn't happening at all if you went by the MSM. I bet they would do the same for these hearings and pretend they didn't exist.

63. This way we can have 6 months of hearings - which is what we would
have in an impeachment - and not take the possible backlash that they are afraid of. I think that is what she is doing. I have expected them to wait for the right time all along. Now we need to hope that these hearings are on TV so the world can see the truth. However, the *ss administration will still try to withhold all the evidence. Impeachment would be better as the evidence is easier to get then. This could also lay the ground work for criminal charges after *ss leaves office - when he can no longer pardon any of the criminals.

22. EVEN WITH IMPEACHMENT, Bush and Cheney can & will escape justice.
Let's suppose both Bush & Cheney are impeached.
Let's suppose both Bush & Cheney are about to be convicted in the Senate.
Here's what happens:

1) Bush pardons Cheney of all crimes he may have committed. Big-ass list. Doesn't matter how big, Presidents have this power.
2) Bush resigns & Cheney becomes President.
3) Cheney pardons Bush all all crimes he may have committed. Big-ass list. Doesn't matter how big, Presidents have this power.
4) Cheney appoints new VP, then resigns, etc. Doesn't matter at this point bcz pardon-damage is done.
5) All hop on plane to Paraguy to live in permanent Moonie paradise, extradition- and testimony-free.

I'm not saying don't do it. Just understand what would *actually* transpire should we *Actually* do this.

Oh, and somewhere in steps 1 & 3 the rest of the bushco gang will get their pardons too.

32. the president can not pardon an impeachment. he can prevent Cheney from jail time
but once impeached neither can EVER hold public office again, so Cheney can not ascend the presidency. And, if they are convicted even a pardon does not prevent them from being tried at the Hague after the impeachment. I believe the impeachment would strip them of their diplomatic immunity as well.

56. Is it possible that:
A) George Bush can't give pardons UNTIL someone has already been prosecuted?
and
B) He only has a narrow window of time to hand the pardons out.

Therefore, if he gets impeached after he leaves office, there's nothing he can do retroactively?

119. The Impeachment IS The Justice
Even without conviction -- or a successful House vote for that matter -- impeachment is a measure of justice for The American People, for that which has been perpetrated in their names without their proper consent. From that point it is only a question of how large that "measure of justice" can grow.

As to your scenario, resignations in disgrace would be an enormous, historical (Nixonian) measure of justice. As would be escape/exile to Paraguay -- in fear of Bugliosian murder charges -- an unprecedented victory.

And FWIW, a couple of other nits. Extradition treaties can be negotiated with Paraguay. But more importantly, pardons are not really magic wands -- though it's easy to think of them that way, even "legally." But politcally, acceptance is an admission of guilt. (Another large measure of justice.)

And just because no one's ever been prosecuted for abusing the pardon power as part of an ongoing criminal conspiracy, doesn't mean it can't be undertaken. Even a right-wing (formerly) Supreme Court would be hard-pressed to conclude that the framers intended the pardon power to be available for criminal purposes, like obstruction of justice.

As for pardons-as-Obstruction: I wonder if it could be successfully argued that bush Obstructed by commuting Scooter's sentence?

129. I think any jury would convict on the Libby pardon
The trouble is getting the facts and circumstances in front of a jury. Clearly bush/cheney violated the Espionage Act, only in Euphemedia dreamworld does the authority to declassify include the right to abuse that authority. And just as clearly his pardon of Libby was a continuance of that criminal conspiracy.

It might even be remotely possible that a sealed indictment awaits their leaving office -- though I don't give the plodder Fitzgerald that much credit. With Libby perjuring himself to conceal cheney's actions and the probability of pardons looming, the case would be virtually unprosecutable until then.

Now, Fitzgerald didn't have the bushkid's admission of culpability (via McClellan). That would help any future prosecution.

But unlike Bugliosi's murder charge, there wouldn't appear to be a state charge to hang it on -- it would have to be a federal prosecution. And even if an Obama administration puts the Justice Dept. back together again, I can't see that fence-sitter recognizing his duty to set the record straight and provide accountability for the American People.

If that were true, he wouldn't already be the Standard Bearer For Impeachophobia.

Maybe Kucinich's 35 Articles, with promises of 60 got to her. She couldn't allow the Judiciary to proceed on the 35 because of complicity. The 60 would have made her look even worse.

Something happened, though. Kucinich found one Article she could allow to be heard.

30. This gets interesting even if it leads nowhere
I take it the main change here has to to do with Kucinich unexpectedly reducing the articles to one.
it makes even a dead end committee investigation look feasible, focused and on target for October politics. She went out of her way to squelch the Committee taking up the first articles. This time, OK with the extra wording thrown in to diminish any resurgent expectations for a debate in the House. Sizzle and fizzle. I think the clock is running and some usefulness is seen in dealing with immanent Bush/Cheney adventures.

Time to stop running away and begin asserting control over the government? Who knows? It is little enough. Definitely DK found a way in and they NEED to counter the planned surge success draw down tripe or any Iran scare to cover in the very possible meltdown of the necessary Bush/Cheney political strategy.

With all deliberate speed, impeachment slides under a place mat.

Holding impeachment hearings would keep this administration too distracted to do a lot more illegal things before he leaves office. That is, invading Iran, etc..

But, by "taking it off the table," she essentially gave him free reign, without any leverage whatsoever, even became complicit in the ongoing criminal enterprise.

She's a good representative. But she's not the bold leader that was needed to unite the Dems into standing firm against Bush. Think of Newt G and the machine he put in place for fighting every step of the second half of the Clinton administration - in comparison, I've seen wet noodles with more backbone than the current congress.

If Pelosi had started Impeachment (when we were promised) How much destruction would have been averted?

Here's One: Would the FISA bill have even come up?

How much other damage has he done since 2006 and how much more can and will he do before January?

with trying to get him on "lying" re Iraq . .
because they can always fall back on intelligence "interpretations" ---

I think Signing Statements and TORTURE, FISA violations immediately upon
taking office --- and other issues would be easier.

This is a lawless administration --- there are many ways to go.

The DOJ issues --- also as important as lying re the war . . . but again
I think difficult to prove "politicization" . . .

Shirley got 11% of the vote with little media coverage and almost no support from the Democratic party.
The so called progressives in the local PDA associated group, Democratic InAction, didn't even support Golub.
Cindy has a lot of support here in the city as well as around the nation. She'll probably do well in the election.

107. There's a difference here...
It takes a while to turn "lied about oral sex" into an impeachable offense. I will continue to maintain that with the level of malfeasance the Bush administration, especially its titular head, has displayed, it should be possible to impeach Bush, get it through both houses of Congress and order a rail to run him out of town on in no more than six weeks.

We're also going to be helped by a few Republican senators: this time around, most of the senators who are up for reelection are Republicans. They know if they allow Bush to walk scot-free after all the malfeasance we'll lay down in the trial, getting reelected is going to be very difficult. "Hi, reelect me even though I allowed one of the worst mass murderers of the last fifty years to escape justice."

Everyone is broke, busted and disgusted. And the American people have had enough of the pussyfooting around from people we elect to represent us. For the last 7+ yes, we have had taxation without representation. And I for one am sick of it. Everyone where I go I bring of the topic of the price of gas, the economy (especially the price of food), the lies from Bushco and how useless our Congress has been in getting things done to resolve any of the issues I just named. I simply can not wait till January 20, 2009 for Obama to get the WH. Go forbid it's McCain, I will pack up and leave this country. They can take their citizenship and shove it that point, because it would mean nothing.

83. There is still time...
If the House moved on this, there would still be time to impeach him before the election. And depending on the mood of the country, not being helped by inflation, the Senate might actually threaten to convict as it did with Richard Nixon. The problem, of course, is then Dick Cheney would become president. Who of course would pardon George W Bush. But of course he would have been convicted and removed from office which history would record. And at this point only history will be able to hold him accountable.

The Empress is still serving the Emperor. This is nothing more than political pandering to herself. She probably is facing some angry constituents in November. And so now will pretend she has represented them along with the American people all along.

115. The key word
The key word in the headline (and probably the article as well) is "may." It would be just as accurate (probably more so, if you think about it) to insert a "not" afterward. Most likely Speaker Pelosi is trying to con voters in her district who might be inclined to vote for Cindy Sheehan into thinking that she has supported the impeachment of Pres. Bush all along.

Given the level of intellect and political awareness of the average American voter (liberal, conservative, moderate, whatever), she'll probably be successful in her con job--even (indeed, especially) if the impeachment resolution never amounts to more than a short hearing or two.
