McCain divorce soured relations with Reagans
Source: San Francisco Chronicle

Outside her Bel-Air home, Nancy Reagan stood arm in arm with John McCain and offered a significant - but less than exuberant - endorsement.

"Ronnie and I always waited until everything was decided, and then we endorsed," the Republican matriarch said in March, in the only words she would speak during the five-minute photo-op at her home in Los Angeles. "Well, obviously, this is the nominee of the party."

In a written statement, she described McCain as "a good friend for over 30 years."

But that friendship was strained in the late 1970s by McCain's decision to divorce his first wife, Carol, who was close to the Reagans, and within weeks marry Cindy Hensley, the heiress to a lucrative Arizona beer distributorship.

The Reagans rushed to help Carol McCain, finding her a series of political and White House jobs.

John McCain has made several statements about how he divorced his first wife and married Hensley that conflict with the public record.

2. Republican Family Values...don't you just love 'em?
BTW, I wonder what Jane Wyman (Ronnie's ex-wife) thought of them standing up for the sanctity of marriage?

4. The reason Carol McCain has remained publicly supportive of her ex
is because she was paid handomely with Cindy's money since the divorce, including medical care for life. Cindy paid through the nose to marry McLame. One of her sons is employed by Cindy's beer business.

Her medical bills after the accident, while her husband was in Vietnam, were paid by Ross Perot, who is none too fond of McLame.

5. How nice. The Reagans believed in public-financed welfare for their friends.
For the rest of us - ketchup is a vegetable.

13. It's not prudishness...
apparently Ron and Nancy liked Carol and disliked Cindy, hence the problem.
