Ex-Bush spokesman Tony Snow dies of cancer
Edited on Sat Jul-12-08 07:07 AM by Dr.Phool
Source: MSNBC

WASHINGTON - Tony Snow, a conservative writer and commentator who cheerfully sparred with reporters in the White House briefing room during a stint as President Bush’s press secretary, has died of colon cancer, Fox News reported Saturday. Snow was 53 years old.

Snow, who served as the first host of the television news program “Fox News Sunday” from 1996 to 2003, would later say that in the Bush administration he was enjoying “the most exciting, intellectually aerobic job I’m ever going to have.”

Snow was working for Fox News Channel and Fox News Radio when he replaced Scott McClellan as press secretary in May 2006 during a White House shake-up. Unlike McClellan, who came to define caution and bland delivery from the White House podium, Snow was never shy about playing to the cameras.

123. We might like to think so, but are we really?
I just don't understand the need of so many DUers to obsess over the death of a Republican or somebody with whom they don't agree, getting all bent out of shape by the coverage it gets. One thing we will all have in common is that we will all die. Yes, even Republicans have children and family who love them and will mourn their loss. None of us would be happy to see others delighting in the death of somebody we loved or admired, so why should we do to others what we would not want done to us? It's called empathy, and compassion. You give it unconditionally, not rationed out based on how much you receive.

125. Well, there is a thing about setting the record straight.
It's one thing about being respectful, another thing about saying nothing when others try to over-glamorize someone's record. Let's hope the media learned something with Mr. Russert's passing.

141. I'm sure you've been to a funeral or been in the situation after somebody died.
It's hardly ever the opportunity to set the record straight since the survivors all have the last word and the deceased can never respond again or defend themselves. Everybody tends to be glamorized after their death. It is rare to see a consensus opinion that, "Oh, he was an asshole". One person's asshole is somebody else's hero.

158. There's a difference between 'disagreement'
and pointing out how much damage the recently deceased caused.

Seriously... is pointing out that Bush is responsible for many thousands of deaths mere 'disagreement'? Notsomuch.

I bear Snow no ill-will. I don't think he was a bad person. It's no secret he was a shill, so as long as no one is glorying in his death, what's the problem with talking about both the good and bad aspects of his life?

He personally chose to participate in the Bush regime, knowing full well that it had illegally invaded Iraq. It is only unfortunate that he will never get to see his day in court.

85. Of course it's true that everyone dies,
but for those who place their belief in such things, scripture states that death is the reckoning of accountability we all must face for our sins. Specifically:

"For the wages of sin is death..." Romans 6:23

I'm not saying I believe everything I read in sacred texts. It's just interesting, I think, from the standpoint of broad perspective. Condolences to Mr. Snow's family.

11. From the BBC
Former White House press secretary Tony Snow, has died of cancer, US television station Fox News has announced.

Mr Snow, 53, had been suffering from colon cancer, it said.

He resigned as President George W Bush's spokesman in August 2007 - after just 17 months in the job - citing financial reasons.

Since then he had been working as a television commentator. The father-of-three had joined President Bush's team from Fox News TV in April 2006.

An outspoken conservative presenter, he was the first Washington commentator to be appointed to the White House role - replacing Scott McClellan.

He had served as chief speech writer for President George W Bush's father when he was president.

He had also worked as a columnist for USA Today and editorial page editor of the Washington Times.

13. Having brushed that door, and lost family members to the disease
no one who hasn't committed any crime other than propaganda, deserves to die from this evil destroyer of families, especially when so much evil persists within the Bush misAdministration.

I know his family will never read this but my heart hurts for them today. It may be a joyous day for many here, but his family just knew him as Father, Husband, Tony.

106. Nah. It's not a joyous day here. Nor should it be.
What is to be gained by celebrating his death? He was merely his master's voice. Condolences to his family. They've had a VERY hard road to travel with this disease and while THAT particular anguish is now over, they face more, of a different sort, from here on.

I never lost anybody to colon cancer or other cancers (in one case, it was incidental to a whole other witch's brew of debilitating and life-snuffing diseases, not just the cancer), but I've seen what grave illness can do - to the victim AND his/her loved ones. It's awful. I wouldn't wish it on george w bush, or dick cheney, even.

Besides, when justice finally comes to them, I'd hope they were still sufficiently well and healthy so that the pain of the sword of that justice stands alone.

----

That said, when limbaugh finally meets his maker, for all I know I might feel a little bit differently about the dancing-on-the-grave part. Really can't say, though.

RIP Tony. You can relax now. You're in a place where you don't have to lie or distort anything for any scheming, greedy assholes OR their war-criminal pirate agendas anymore.

124. My mother in law died in my ex-wife's arms from colon cancer
Got it in 1996, thought she had it beat, came back with a vengeance in 2002, spread into her lungs, bones, and brain and ravaged her body. She was 62. She was under 100lbs. when she died. It was a horrible death.

Tony Snow was a mouthpiece, and all he did was spread the propaganda for the cause he believed in, just like we do. He should have lived long enough to see his children grow up.

128. Yeah, it's horrible anguish. I don't know colon cancer deaths. What I know is late-onset
diabetic deaths, longtime congestive heart failure-related deaths, and a bunch of other contributing factors with multiple syllables. But the diabetes was the main killer. AWFUL AWFUL AWFUL AWFUL AWFUL AWFUL AWFUL!!! And I'm sure that while Tony Snow suffered, he undoubtedly followed all his doctors' orders to the letter. My father, on the other hand, remained in complete defiance til the very end. He would NOT give up his donuts and waffles and candy bars and pastries and salty stuff and the rest of it. Just absolutely, flatly refused. He had a whole slew of doctors whose directives he'd ignore. OY. And my mom remained pretty much in denial along with him.

My mother-in-law developed breast cancer and had a mastectomy, but it came back, too. However, by then, she was already on her way out - dementia, heart trouble, lung trouble, and that lovely "ongoing companion," diabetes. Diabetes is for SHIT.

As I said, AWFUL AWFUL AWFUL AWFUL AWFUL AWFUL AWFUL AWFUL AWFUL AWFUL!!

I'm sorry about your mother-in-law. My sympathies. You get SOME consolation in the thought that their suffering is over. But yours still continues.

23. Snow had the best of care.
Tony Snow was a wealthy man and could afford the best of health care. Imagine the prospects of the poor. Would they survive as along as Snow did? Why should we feel sympathy for the family of a man who spent his entire life supporting and defending Conservatism, a political philosophy which would deny medical care to any who can't pay for it?

28. Because we aren't them.
I care about someones well being regardless of class, wealth, philosophy, race, age, etc. I want health care even for those that would deny me mine. I want education even for those that would turn my child away. I cannot go through my life spitting on the graves of those that disagreed with me. All I can do is wish they had a chance to see what I've seen so they might have changed their minds.

37. And that time would be when they die?
Will dancing on his grave change any of what has happened? If a Republican came to this forum disillusioned with their party I think they would keep right on going if they saw the kind of celebration that goes on here when a conservative dies. I would want that person to see people ready to have them on our side.

I didn't mention anything along the lines of satisfaction or superiority. I just think these sorts of events generally reflect badly on DU. I don't get any satisfaction about cursing someone ten minutes after their death is announced.

My local hate radio station, right now, is broadcasting call after call from wingnuts who are lionizing Snow. If we let that kind of thing continue, it will become the Snow Legend. In the world of instant information we can't give lies a chance to grow. We have to crush them immediately.

172. Tony Snow Was Human
I'm a longtime lurker and have posted a few times but this grave dancing is very disturbing to me.

Just as we all have our own opinions and beliefs about how things should be in our nation and in the world, we must also allow other people to have the same privilege, which is what makes our nation great.

I've always thought our democratic party was the party of love and caring for other people. Lately, at least from these forums, that seems to be going by the wayside and that's very bothersome to me.

198. The Subject Here is Tony Snow
I think everyone of us who have a heart cry and grieve for every lost life and especially for the families of those who are left behind. He didn't send those kids off to the war. He had a job to do and now he has lost his life to a horrible disease. He left a wife and children behind. As a person who lost his mother as a 12 YO to heart disease, they are not in for an easy time, believe me.

211. Well no, actually they don't
Lots of people died yesterday. Lots of people died of cancer yesterday. Lots of people died young yesterday and left behind families and friends who will miss them terribly. Where are the public expressions of grief and condolence on this forum for all of those people? Why has Tony Snow been singled out for special consideration? Is it because a lot of people on here actually knew him? No. Is it because they loved what he stood for? Not likely.

And saying that he "had a job to do" lets him off the hook far too easily. His job (to spin, dissemble and lie through his teeth every day to justify Bush administration actions and policies) was in no way forced on him. It was one he accepted freely and carried out enthusiastically.

........apart from being mad at Tony Snow for doing his job and believing in what he believed in - just like you. I really feel sorry for you for that.

I'm sure a lot of people have gone out and spoken for Barack Obama - because that is what they believe in - but they didn't make the news, either. That's life. So many things in this life are so far out of our control.

One thing is for sure - I'm not sure I can bring myself to be a part of a group of people who are so invested in hatred. There seems to be plenty of that to go around here.

If this is representative of the democratic party, I'm not sure I want to identify myself as such.

If you think that the things Tony Snow believed in politically are just as valid and worthwhile as the things that Barack Obama or Al Gore or Russ Feingold believe in, this probably isn't the place for you. And yes, I DO have other issues...starting with a Bush administration that sent thousands of Americans and hundreds of thousands of Iraqis to their deaths (with Tony Snow's active and enthusiastic support) in an unnecessary military action designed only to enrich them and their cronies. If that doesn't make you deeply angry, then you're probably in the wrong place, though what the right place would be for someone like that, I can't imagine.

36. Testify, Brother-
I'm sorry for Snow's family. Colon cancer is a horrible way to go. I wonder if like Lee Atwater he got religion at the end. His wealth and gold plated insurance could not save him. However, without the wealth and insurance he would have been dead a lot sooner. Let's remind ourselves that America is the only nation that runs health care as a business. You'd think that the conservative ass hats would get the message.

44. Well, That Is True, BUT...
Feel free to "exploit" his health care experience as an example of the "two Americas", but that doesn't mean we can't have sympathy for him or his family. Just because the situation is worse for thousands (or even millions) of Americans doesn't mean it was good for Tony Snow or his family and friends. Sometimes, all the money in the world can't cure cancer - or even stop the pain and suffering associated with it.

It is sad that Tony Snow died so young. He had access to the best healthcare in the world to give him a fighting chance. It is also sad that thousands of Americans each year also deal with this disease, and many of them do not have the same access to healthcare.

151. Compassion, being limitless is only wasted when not used...
"Why should we feel sympathy for the family of a man..."

Compassion, being limitless is only wasted when not used. Additionally, my compassion for another's misery is not predicated on thier compassion for me.

I have no qualms with anyone who decides to forgo compassion and sympathy for the dead and the ill, but to advertise absurd justifications denying that most basic of hman emotions should be (I think) relegated to other venues under different circumstances-- otherwise, we become mirror images of Fred Phelps.

Any emotion we feel toward another person is never "forced" on us (e.g., "he *made* me angry..."), rather, it's always a choice we alone make (e.g., "I *allowed* myself to get angry justified by his action").

197. That slash in funding is one of the big stories that is being ignored.
We're going to be tripping over the remains of Bush's blow-out for years. Start with global climate change and work your way down the list. We are so close to real cures and treatments for so many diseases. Bush's cuts have condemned thousands, if not millions to unnecessary pain and death. It'll be like getting TB in 1943 before the right antibiotics were found.

205. Completely ignored
And the most insidious thing about it is that this year they didn't "technically" cut anything, they froze the budget which, over the last five years with inflation, increased research costs, and previous cuts and freezes, is equal to billions of research dollars lost. There's a whole lot of promising research avenues that just AREN'T being pursued because the money just isn't there. I personally know 5 investigators who have left the country in order to seek out better funding. Researchers are scared, even in my field (cancer research) which has fairly secure non-governmental funding sources (foundations, etc). Without NIH funding, though, a lot is being cut back on. It provides a backbone for researchers to build upon, and without that, the piecemeal grants they get from other sources just don't cover costs.

52. At least his family had time to prepare
I don't mean that in a nasty way. My 50 yo BIL died suddenly in May. No one was expecting it, and my sister is still in shock. On the other hand, when my father died 2 1/2 yrs. ago, we had 6 weeks from the time of his diagnosis to his death to adjust to the thought that he wasn't going to be with us for long.

Until the death of my BIL, I always said that when it's my time, I want to go quickly (I still say that I don't want to linger unresponsive on life support). I wanted to go real quick. After helping my sister through this though, imo, I'd rather have at least SOME time to say goodbye, to make sure everything is in order, and so on.

I don't think I'm explaining this well, so in a nutshell, I mean that I now believe that a wish for a sudden, painless death is selfish. Of course, very few of us have any choice in the matter.

So anyway, back to the OP.

RIP Tony. Now you know the truth of what your former employers did, and maybe you can help them from beyond to do the right things in the little time they have left in office.

Wishes of comfort and peace to his family.

55. Tony Snow Dies Of Cancer - AP
Edited on Sat Jul-12-08 07:50 AM by DWilliamsamh
Source: AP Via Yahoo News

By DOUGLASS K. DANIEL, Associated Press Writer
7 minutes ago

WASHINGTON - Tony Snow, a conservative writer and commentator who cheerfully sparred with reporters in the White House briefing room during a stint as President Bush's press secretary, died Saturday of colon cancer. He was 53.

"America has lost a devoted public servant and a man of character," President Bush said in a statement from Camp David, where he was spending the weekend. "It was a joy to watch Tony at the podium each day. He brought wit, grace, and a great love of country to his work."

Snow, who served as the first host of the television news program "Fox News Sunday" from 1996 to 2003, would later say that while the Bush administration he was enjoying "the most exciting, intellectually aerobic job I'm ever going to have."

The entire * admin is a bunch of sociopathic killers. This guy was one of the worst. He laughed when reporters told him * was in violation of the Hatch Act. He called Obama "Slick Barry". He made millions off of lies, hatred, and terror.

Sorry. I cannot grieve.

243. Sorry for you that you have so little humanity....
Snow was no Hitler. That you would use such hyperbole is passing ridiculous.

And my OP said I couldn't stand him in public life and I felt sorry for his FAMILY. Have you gone so far round the bend that your political animus has replaced every shred of human sympathy for even an "opponent's" family?

It must suck to be you.

Even though Snow demeaned the role of press secretary by treating it as a talk radio gig, his death at such a young age is still a tragedy.

All these ages are too young to die and this administration is probably killing a couple dozen a day in Iraq. Mr. Snow covered up for these crimes and actively encouraged them. So is 53 too young for death provocateur ... I don't think so. Mr. Snow's death is 9 years too late if you ask me.

Although he was a glib mouthpiece for an administration that was both evil and incompetent he had not been heard from recently due to his illness. Truthfully I had pretty much forgotten about him. So his death really changes nothing for me.

Although I suppose faux news will elevate him to russert like status in order not to be outdone by NBC on the occasion of timmeh's death, it won't affect me either since I never turn them on.

Sympathy for his family??? How much sympathy do think they felt for all the sons and daughters that returned from Iraq in body bags? This man's lies helped to perpetuate this shameful, illegal war and I think it's high time those on the conservative side get to experience a little grief. I don't feel any sympathy for them because they don't give a tinker's damn for us.

73. The coverage on NYC radio was fawning

They said he charmed the "always picky" Washington Press Corp. Isn't that their job? To ask questions and not to fawn?
I obviously did not know him personally and he did show admirable courage in the face of a horrible disease, which he had a really tough battle with, but he also was a mouthpiece for a morally bankrupt administration.

I hope that at least before he died, he made personal atonement for the things he did, like Lee Atwater did.

53 is very young to die. perhaps given more time, he'd have come into the light.

Still, sympathy to his family and children.

78. Of all the smarmy little twerps in the BFEE,
Tony always seemed to me like he was a bit out of place. To me he always appeared awkward like he really didn't get comfortable with his position. I think the stress of having to go in front of the people lie for his bosses--make no mistake, we all do it; most of us just don't do it on TV--took it's toll on Tony.

During one of my hospital stays, the guy in the next bed had colon cancer. I would not wish that on anyone.

My sympathies to his friends and family.

Being clear for 26 years now is a great thing, let me be clear about that, but fear comes with each yearly tumor marker screening that the "shark is back in the water". Learning about Ted Kennedy's brain tumor, and now, Tony Snow's death after a recurrence, provides grim reminders that nothing is certain and that each day is its own reward.

Hope you'll get to take that trip to the lake you'd been planning. Hope those who know you don't have to watch your body devastated for the next six months.

118. I found myself choking with tears when I first heard his cancer was back. And I despised Tony Snow!
But that's what makes us liberals: we're supposed to be empathetic--and I thought about his wife and kids soldiering on without their dad. You knew when you saw him last year that he wasn't going to last much longer, regardless of the forced optimism.

Anyway, my point is that you don't have to like or even respect someone to feel bad about their passing--not if you think of those who care about them, not if you've ever lost anyone close to you and you know how it feels! We can show respect for the living and not add to their pain. You wouldn't want it done to you, right????

However...one caveat: if Dick Cheney were to die tomorrow, I'd probably gloat and grave-dance my ass off!! We must always rejoice when evil is removed and the citizens can come out into the light again.

196. I go with Ezekiel 33 on this one.
Indeed, whenever I hear about any death. Even Palestinian or Pakhtun suicide bombers.

"Say unto them, As I live, saith the Lord GOD, I have no pleasure in the death of the wicked; but that the wicked turn from his way and live: turn ye, turn ye from your evil ways; for why will ye die, O house of Israel?

"Therefore, thou son of man, say unto the children of thy people, The righteousness of the righteous shall not deliver him in the day of his transgression: as for the wickedness of the wicked, he shall not fall thereby in the day that he turneth from his wickedness; neither shall the righteous be able to live for his righteousness in the day that he sinneth."

There is justice: The sinner should die, a starving person should be punished for stealing bread for his children. There is love and mercy: The sinner should stop sinning and be virtuous, but when we see a starving person steal, we should feel sympathy. Unless I'm completely cynical and closed-minded, when a starving person has to steal I can only infer that those with enough, including me, failed to do their duty and help. It means that with death also comes the cessation of any hope of having that person stop doing wrong and start doing right. This goes for every death. Even Stalin's, even Hitler's, even, when the time comes, Mugabe's. The amount I mourn a death isn't contingent on how I judge that person's life, but on the amount of attention I give that person's death.

One doesn't need to find pleasure in another's death--in fact, one shouldn't, ever, it diminishes the person finding pleasure and renders him/her less human. But there's also justice, and the appropriate word for seeing it accomplished isn't "pleasure", I think, but "satisfaction". If you find pleasure in seeing a person caged like an animal, there's something wrong. But that's second place in my system of values--an essential second place, to be sure, but still second.

147. Particularly if you have ulcerative colitis
Edited on Sat Jul-12-08 11:56 AM by Ms. Toad
as Tony Snow did. (Or a family history - as he also did)

My daughter (age 17) had three colonoscopies because of this illness before I had my first one. One you have passed the 8-10 year mark with this illness, the recommendation is that you have one every other year (some recommend every year). The risk to her, at age 15 (diagnosis + 10 years) exceeded the risk of someone at age 50 - my next one is scheduled for 10 years out - her next one is next summer.

For my own peace of mind, I wish I could find out how regularly he was having colonoscopies to make sure my daughter is having them more frequently than he was.

(Edited to add relative risks)

245. I've been trying to find out if he had regular colonoscopies
in the years before he was diagnosed. I thought I heard he had been, which scared the hell out of me, but if he had ulcerative colitis it makes sense. My sister died in her late 30's from colon cancer and my brothers and I get colonoscopies every 3 years. None of us have UC. After his last colonscopy my bro was found to have diverticulosis, which is not as severe as the more commonly known diverticulitis, and I've had a couple polyps removed.

I hate the prep sooo much that I've been putting it off so it's getting closer to 4 years since the last one, but this sad news combined with the new findings about the harder to spot flat lesions that have been found to be even more likely to cause cancer than polyps, the procrastinating stops toorrow morning.

Ms. Toad - I made my daughter get her first colonoscopy at 23. Not only did my sis pass from it, but 3 people have died from it in her dad's family.

246. My daughter was not yet 5
when she had her first. As long as she has to have UC, I'm glad that she reached the high risk category while she is still under my control (and health insurance) to get the habit of regular colonoscopies ingrained.

The flat lesions are the ones associated with UC - so they've been specifically looking for them with my daughter, and I've always known they were a particular cancer risk for her (and anyone else with UC). I'm actually pretty shocked that the association between flat lesions and cancer was considered news a couple of months ago. Any GI doc should have known that at least 13 years ago - and probably a lot longer - since it was one of the early things I knew about my daughter's illness. It's hard to tell from the articles, but perhaps the "news" is that they are also common in non-UC patients.

Good luck with your test. As to your brother's diverticulosis - unfortunately most Americans don't eat enough fiber, and end up with diverticulosis (which can become diverticulitis when things get trapped in the diverticulosis pockets and the pockets get inflamed). I've got a bit myself (and my grandmother was plagued by diverticulitis).

worth commenting on. He is no longer the press secretary for the ChenyBush administration. We all knew he had cancer and that it had spread. We knew, when we thought about it, that he pobably would not live very long. I would think that a brief notice, without comment, would suffice to inform us on DU that he has died. No reason to clog up the DU boards with constant reference to and chewing over the fact of his death. We have other news and other issues that are much more worth discussing.

His Words

Blessings arrive in unexpected packages—in my case, cancer.

Those of us with potentially fatal diseases—and there are millions in America today—find ourselves in the odd position of coping with our mortality while trying to fathom God's will. Although it would be the height of presumption to declare with confidence What It All Means, Scripture provides powerful hints and consolations.

The first is that we shouldn't spend too much time trying to answer the why questions: Why me? Why must people suffer? Why can't someone else get sick? We can't answer such things, and the questions themselves often are designed more to express our anguish than to solicit an answer.

I don't know why I have cancer, and I don't much care. It is what it is—a plain and indisputable fact. Yet even while staring into a mirror darkly, great and stunning truths begin to take shape. Our maladies define a central feature of our existence: We are fallen. We are imperfect. Our bodies give out.

But despite this—because of it—God offers the possibility of salvation and grace. We don't know how the narrative of our lives will end, but we get to choose how to use the interval between now and the moment we meet our Creator face-to-face.

Second, we need to get past the anxiety. The mere thought of dying can send adrenaline flooding through your system. A dizzy, unfocused panic seizes you. Your heart thumps; your head swims. You think of nothingness and swoon. You fear partings; you worry about the impact on family and friends. You fidget and get nowhere.

To regain footing, remember that we were born not into death, but into life—and that the journey continues after we have finished our days on this earth. We accept this on faith, but that faith is nourished by a conviction that stirs even within many nonbelieving hearts—an intuition that the gift of life, once given, cannot be taken away. Those who have been stricken enjoy the special privilege of being able to fight with their might, main, and faith to live—fully, richly, exuberantly—no matter how their days may be numbered.

Third, we can open our eyes and hearts. God relishes surprise. We want lives of simple, predictable ease—smooth, even trails as far as the eye can see—but God likes to go off-road. He provokes us with twists and turns. He places us in predicaments that seem to defy our endurance and comprehension—and yet don't. By his love and grace, we persevere. The challenges that make our hearts leap and stomachs churn invariably strengthen our faith and grant measures of wisdom and joy we would not experience otherwise.

Sorry, but you don't "have" politics like you "have" a headache. His politics were 100% of his own choosing, developed over a lifetime of considering all of the possible options, and let's face it, he choose some pretty screwed up ones.

He was just one of the flacks. Media manipulators for hire. Spin machines. I have often wondered how they manage to sleep at night.

To them, it is just a job. They are hired to paint the pretty pictures. But sometimes in order to paint the picture you have to share the visualization of it and I suspect Tony Snow more than anyone else was a perfect example of that.

That makes me really sad. I am sorry for their loss and what they've had to see and endure at a young age. Losing a parent is hard anytime, but moreso for those who are young and need their parents. They have their lifetime ahead of them with so many milestones; birthdays, getting drivers licenses, proms, graduations, weddings, all without their father.

May they and his wife find comfort and may Mr. Snow RIP.

And I remember being shocked at the time that someone battling what is usually a death-sentence illness (my father passed this March from it) would not have learned anything about life. His illness and what he went through obviously not having taught him anything about compassion, humility or empathy. But there he was, Tony Snow. As hateful and arrogant as ever.

176. Sorry, but I just don't get it
Ok, I understand why people here don't want to say anything bad about the guy after he's dead, but whence the overwhelming need of the people on this board to publicly express grief and sympathy over the death of someone that most (if not all) of them never met, never spoke to and didn't know, and who stood for things that they hate and despise? And the condolences to his family? If you did happen to know them personally, why not just express your condolences personally and privately, and if you didn't, why post them here, where his family will never see them?

Tony Snow was not the only person who died yesterday. He was not the only person who died of cancer. Or who died young. Or who left behind family and friends that will miss him. How many of those others have the people here posted public grief and condolences for? What in the world earns Tony Snow special feelings or consideration on this board, above and beyond anyone else? Why not just let him lie and say nothing, and save your pity for the people who have suffered and died because of Bush administration policies that Snow helped promote?

It's a potlatch, only with ostentatious displays of insincere grief rather than potentially ruinous redistribution of property, but the idea is still the same, to compete through excessive generosity.

a legacy of the never harming others and even making the planet a better place.

We are not the same under any religion, karma, or the legacy we leave behind from the acts we've done.

If you die you will not leave behind your footprints of causing a hundred thousand to die and their future generations not to be born. That is his legacy. Your footprints will not leave that much harm that keeps on giving when you die. If there is nothing else when you die then what you are has to be measured why what you've done on earth while you lived. You two are not the same. Nor will you be remembered the same after you've gone.

But what about the man whose entire family was slaughtered by american bombings in Iraq ? Snow, as Bush's spokesman, bears a responsibility.

So what about this Iraqi man ?

A lot of people in this country (and on this blog) rejoiced when Saddam and his henchmen were killed.
Or is rejoicing at the death of your ennemies only reserved for americans ?

247. I can't believe I'm even chiming in here on this...
but here goes:

I don't agree with Snow's politics. I have no respect for anyone who would work for the Bush crime family or this corrupt administration.
But I certainly never wished the guy ill will.
I'm sure his family is upset. I've certainly lost loved ones, so I'm sure they are hurting.

I loved my grandfather. And he was THE hardest working, loyal, steadfast, tender-hearted person you would ever meet. But when he was angry he was probably the meanest person I've ever known. Yikes.
He was a great guy, but he was also at times a real ass and down right mean. But he never lied for others, and would never have worked for the likes of W.

Death doesn't change who people were. It only magnifies it, because we are left with the consequences of the life they led.

But certainly the media has a field day when a conservative passes. They use it as a tool for their agenda. That's pretty sick. But it's also not surprising.

Just because Snow was an ass, doesn't mean his family doesn't miss him. My grandfather was a big ass, and I sure do miss him.
