Church Cancels Teen Gun Giveaway
Source: KOCO

An Oklahoma church canceled a controversial gun giveaway for teenagers at a weekend youth conference.

Windsor Hills Baptist had planned to give away a semiautomatic assault rifle until one of the event's organizers was unable to attend.

The church’s youth pastor, Bob Ross, said it’s a way of trying to encourage young people to attend the event. The church expected hundreds of teenagers from as far away as Canada.

-----

A video on the church Web site shows the shooting competition from last year’s conference. A gun giveaway was part of the event last year. This year, organizers included it in their marketing.

“I don’t want people thinking ‘My goodness, we’re putting a weapon in the hand of somebody that doesn’t respect it who are then going to go out and kill,'” said Ross. “That’s not at all what we’re trying to do.”

WWJS - What Would Jesus Shoot. I'm a gun owner but on this I still say WTF on giving to a teen! I could even understand an air rifle but a real AR-15!

2. Wow. That's bright.
About as bright as a 2 watt light bulb, which only goes to show how dim some people are when it comes to addressing the young generation that thinks MTV, Survivor, and GTA4 are how to live...

21. MY LED 2 watt bulb is very bright.
It is terrible, technology is making the phase "As bright as a 2 watt light bulb" obsolete.

3. Where in the article did it say AR-15?. Second an assault rifle is fully automatic & covered in
TITLE 26, CHAPTER 53—MACHINE GUNS, DESTRUCTIVE DEVICES, AND CERTAIN OTHER FIREARMS

Looks like incompetent reporting catering to hysterical gun-grabbers.

5. Watch the station's video - it says it there - oh and look at little pic
Edited on Sat Jul-12-08 06:01 PM by RamboLiberal
And while it is legal and usually I support those who want to own an AR-15 even this gun owner thinks it's not a good giveaway for a teen church event!

BTW they're saving it for next year's giveaway. They didn't pull it b/c of publicity but b/c they're ex-Green Beret minister is out of action this year due to injury.

Oh and explain why that bill that lapsed was called the "Assault Weapons Ban"? You and I both know AR-15s are referred to in Pop Culture as assault weapons fairly or not.

8. The article said the rifle cost $800 and it appears the minister did not know an AR-15 from other
semi-automatic rifles.

The rifle appearing several times in the video clip appears to be a variant of a Ruger Mini-14.

10. Blame the church if they got the gun wrong
Edited on Sat Jul-12-08 06:20 PM by RamboLiberal
And the Ruger they show is from last year's video of that shoot. You can buy a AR-15 for $800. And if they paid $800 for a Ruger Mini 14 they may have overpaid.

But imagine the outcry if a black church did this!

11. Had you been paying attention, you'd have noted that the video
was of clips from last year's shooting competition - and one of those kids was shooting on full auto. The advertised weapon, on their web site, was an AR15. Oh, and the pastor, former Green Beret, probably knows an AR15 from a Mini-14.

But plese, jump right in and show us you don't know what you are talking about.

9. It IS an AR-15, and journalistically it is quicker and simpler to say
'assault rifle' than 'assault rifle styled weapon' - which is what the AR15 is.

It also specified 'semi-automatic', just in case there was any confusion.

But don't let that stop you getting hysterical.

15. Hysterical gun-grabbers? In Oklahoma??
Edited on Sat Jul-12-08 07:12 PM by michele77
You really oughta watch the news out here. The LAST people the local news caters to are hysterical gun-grabbing types. The level of offense I experience on a daily basis reading/watching the news has become a common joke to my husband. In Oklahoma, the journalists do not give a rats' arse about folks likely to get hysterical about anything but God, gay-bashing, people speaking Spanish and women having abortions.

Or, at least that's my interpretation of the OKC news. Tulsa folks can chime in.

edited to add something

22. "A day before this story broke, a 12-year-old John White was accidentally shot"
in the head and killed in Oklahoma County by a 14-year-old friend who had easy access to his grandfather's loaded weapons, local news stations reported.

"We would still have John with us today if people had taken more care, if they had used gun locks or gun safes," says Kim Proc, John White's great aunt.

Proc says officials told them they confiscated at least seven loaded guns from the home where White was that day, all owned by the 14-year-old's grandfather, Channel 52 KSBI-TV reported.

John White's family is determined to make sure his death impacts the way guns are kept in homes by changing the law.

Yet another tragedy caused by guns in the household.

23. Sent the gun giveaway article to....
a friend whose ex-husbands kid with his second wife (after my friend) is accused with 2 others of killing a teenager in their class. By most accounts, what would have likely been a fistfight (maybe even baseball bats) if these teens didn't have easy access to guns became a teenager pulling out a semi-automatic weapon and killing another teenager.

25. Crime was a Predacessor of this
like drinking and then killing someone with your car. The drinking while driving is a factor?

Here (NC) weapons MUST be secured from minors, failure to do so is criminal.
