Midwest Air to give 1,200 the pink slip

MILWAUKEE (AP) -- Midwest Airlines says it will reduce its work force by 1,200 people as it removes its fleet of 12 MD-80 jets from service.

The cuts represent about 40% of current staffing at Midwest and its Skyway subsidiary, the company says.

"In order to successfully restructure, there is no way to avoid deep and painful reductions to our current work force," said Timothy E. Hoeksema, chairman and chief executive, in a statement.

The company will begin notifying affected employees Monday, with most jobs ended by mid-September.

I've been flying them for years. I'm scheduled to fly with them in August again. I hope they don't go under. Love the wide seats and the cookies.

4. I used to always fly Midwest from LAX to Milwaukee at Christmas -

until a few years ago when they cancelled a flight on me and I spent most of my ruined Christmas vacation at home, weeping, instead of with family.
