Bush to Veto Medicare Bill Tuesday; Override Expected
Source: CQ Politics

President Bush will veto the recently cleared Medicare bill Tuesday, a senior administration official said Monday on a conference call arranged by the White House.

The administration is unhappy with the Republican senators who voted for the bill July 9, but appears to hold out little hope of being able to sustain the veto, or flip back GOP senators who deserted the president on the controversial measure.

“If everyone votes as they did, we would not be able to sustain this veto,” said Tevi Troy, deputy secretary of the Department of Health and Human Services.

Speaking of the likely override, Troy said, “That is a real problem, but it’s not the Democrats who put us in that position. It’s the nine Republicans” who changed their votes in support of the bill.

Troy’s declaration of the president’s intentions ended speculation that Bush might bow to congressional pressure and sign the bill. Several of the Republicans who voted for the bill have since declared they will vote to override the president’s veto as well.

1. Very revealing that Bush saves his veto to try to deny health care to
senior citizens and to children and to stop the ban of water boarding. What a guy.

2. I almost wish the veto wouldn't be overriden
Let the Repukes squirm in November with angry seniors who's doctors will no longer see them. That is one bloc of voters that pays attention to their issues and votes!

8. Tell me about it. Even my FOX News loving parents (who make me insane with their right wing
politics) were praising Ted Kennedy for his vote on the Medicare bill.

10. add some disabled persons to this list
Some (not all) disabled persons are on Medicare if they paid into it long enough prior to becoming disabled.

This is such a disgrace!

I'm glad they have the votes to override it!

7. George W. bUsh doesn't care about American seniors and kids.
He does, however, care about torture. He's all for that.

9. This bill also affects military retirees and military familly members
Tricare is the health care system for veterans and their family members. That little bastard wants to hit seniors, children, veterans and their family members by cutting payments to doctors by nearly 11%. This will reduce the number of doctors who will see Medicare and Tricare patients. I hope he knows how much he is hated.

p.s. health care in Iraq is free, paid for by our tax dollars.
