Energy tsunami coming, ex-policymakers warn
Source: Associated Press

WASHINGTON (AP) -- A bipartisan group of 27 elder statesmen is sending an open letter to both presidential candidates and every member of Congress saying the country faces "a long-term energy crisis" that threatens the security and prosperity of future generations if swift action isn't taken.

The group includes Henry Kissinger, Colin Powell and six other former secretaries of state or defense, former senators of both parties and a half dozen former senior White House advisers and other Cabinet officers for both Republican and Democratic presidents.

"We must re-examine outdated and entrenched positions," the group says in the letter to be sent Wednesday to the campaigns of Democratic presidential candidate Barack Obama and to his GOP rival John McCain, as well as members of Congress and all 50 governors.

"...Foremost we must rise above a partisan differences and be united in our efforts," they wrote.

1. Safest bet
is to not invade Iraq 5 years ago. Next safest is to stop speculation on oil prices. Shall I continue ?

8. Carter knew ...
... Jimmy Carter initiated an energy policy back in 78/79 that would have resulted in a a great amount of energy independence in the US.

After Reagan was elected, he completely dismantled that policy to appease his big oil masters.

4. But, but, but......
Monkeyboy said yesterday that all we needed to do was cut off our air conditioners when we left our homes. If Sir Monkeyboy said it, it must be true, right?

5. Kissinger and Powell? GMAFB!!!
These two assholes can take their share of the blame for the mess we're in right now. Where were they 5-10-20 years ago? All of a sudden they pull their heads out of their butts?

9. They're probably looking to invest in companies ...
that will help them get richer ...

When republicans start talking about alternative energy, it is only motivated by profits.

11. This was my first thought also.
The repugs have been singing the praises of nuke energy, or as they like to call it, "Alternitive Energy" (Puke), for about six months now. I'm guessing they are getting some fat checks from the lobbyist.

7. With those people signing it - it's a set up - probably intened to save their little
behinds.

After all these years we are supposed to believe that they are sincere?

This, at the same time we learn that Dick manipulated the EPA?

They are rotten thieves and liars.

Hey, James, why not give us back our votes?

Hey, Carlucci, why doesn't the Carlyle Group work for this nation?

Hey, Colin, why did you go with the big lie?

13. Energy issues are the most core essential issues to everyone's vital personal and economic issues...
The fact that even DU tucks it over into a corner in environment/energy I find amusing.

People, even smart ones here, just don't realize how much more important energy issues are than 99% of the bullshit that gets discussed.

14. So very well said. Huzzah, sir! (or madame)
Your handle is also so appropriate. This is nothing more than plausible deniability of responsibility. This stuff has been entered into the fray so, so slowly, so when the Malthusian becomes the new norm, both parties can say they told us and we didn't listen.
Will we quit bitching about the dumb shit when we learn that the pen that Clinton used when he signed the repeal of Glass-Steagall was given by Clinton to a VERY wealthy European Hedge fund manager? How about when you look into the massive sums of money given to Schumer, Dodd, Corzine, and yes even Lord Barry. Christ, our party gets 60-70% of the Finance money out there compared to Republicans. FYI, Finance is the SINGLE largest sector in the economy. Is this any less duplicitous than PNAC and Dick Cheney???

DU better start learning to actually read before they speak, otherwise I think the betrayal will cause a heart attack.

They are ALL elites, don't you get it???

The oil companies have been slowly buying back their stock for a few years now, telling you that they can't grow. A fucking Prius takes twice as much energy as a VW Jetta diesel to construct, and gets the same mileage. But a Prius has become nothing more than the new Cadillac. Something to boost the ego, MORE conspicuous consumption, but this time you get to feel good about it.

Cheap oil is GONE people, your way of life is gone. This isn't a future event, this is now. Nobody's really bitching about GM because they know there is NOTHING they can do except shut up and hope the other benefits don't get cut. Social Security will be needs based in the next few years, and life expectancy will drop. We are reverting to the mean. Learn, read, adapt, and hurry, because the learning curve is long and time is short.
