New York Governor Paterson, NAACP condemn New Yorker magazine cover

CINCINNATI (AP) -- New York Gov. David Paterson and the NAACP on Thursday condemned the New Yorker magazine's satirical cover depicting Democrat Barack Obama and his wife as flag-burning radicals.

Paterson, a Democrat who is New York's first black governor, told delegates at the civil rights organization's national convention that the cover that hit newsstands Monday is ''one of the most malignant, vicious covers of a magazine I have ever seen,'' drawing a loud applause. ''It depicted them as angry, hateful, violent and unpatriotic,'' Paterson added.

The National Association for the Advancement of Colored People released a resolution that calls the cover ''tasteless, Islam-a-phobic, mean spirited and racially offensive.'' It calls on other Americans who are offended by the cover to contact the magazine about their concerns....

In comments after his speech, Paterson said that no matter what reason the magazine gives for the cover, it was hurtful. ''The reality is that it hurts people, they knew it would hurt people; it was designed to do that and also to feed the prurient interest of bigoted, prejudiced people in this society,'' Paterson said....

6. and he meant it.

Because he was legally blind since infancy , there are some ridiculous, uncalled-for blind jokes and funny comments about him. One said that he might be blind also of his predecessor’s wrongdoings speculating that he will pardon him. Another said, “… a blind leading the blinds … he may never see that America is doomed.” Another one rebutted, “… excited to see somebody with disability to do so great.” Paterson once said, “I think people’s perception of me sometimes is that I see more than I actually do.” On an interview, days before being sworn, he responded with humor and frankness,
“I kind of feel like the student who’s getting ready for the final exam, but they didn’t attend any classes.”

5. not completely- He CAN read when he wears glasses and looks
very closely at something- I would imagine he could have seen the cover well enough- probably in sections (he has to be that close to it) but enough to see just what it was.

He's also black- which gives his voice more credibility than people who are white and who are saying "it was only satire".

IMO.

peace~
