Labor Dept.: Florida tops in lost jobs
Source: UPI

MIAMI(UPI) -- Florida had more lost jobs during the last year than any other U.S. state with a total of 78,100 jobs, U.S. Department of Labor figures show.

The Miami Herald said Saturday that the growing number of lost jobs in Florida was likely due to increases in the cost of living in the southern state, along with a declining number of housing sales.

In comparison, Texas was among the top states on the list thanks to an additional 245,000 jobs statewide.

Construction industry jobs were the worst hit during the last year in Florida with 81,600 jobs being eliminated statewide.

2. Wow, McCain has to pick Crist now!
Crist's results match McCain's own admitted lack of knowledge on the economy. Talk about a veep complementing the ticket.

Of course, not all is Crists' fault; his predecessor had a hand in it as well.

4. They don't have any more jobs to lose in a big chunk like Florida did.

What a mess.

5. Could that explain why the worst / weirdest / most f'd up news stories are coming from FL lately?
Could it be some Floridians' unique way to grieve a high unemployment rate?

Think of it this way - 95% of the people in Florida are not FROM Florida. They are from Ohio, New York, Illinois, Michigan, etc., etc. Florida's problem seems to be that we attract weird people from other states.

Edit: I was looking through my local paper and the "help wanted" section is not what it used to be. It went from at least 3 full pages to it's present 1/2 a page. I couldn't believe my eyes. I had trouble finding it, it was so small. The fewest jobs available in that paper that I've seen in the 30 years I've been here. It does not look good.

8. My cousin and his family live in Florida.
Both his daughter and son were recently laid off because of the downturns there.

He was a Bush supporter, and still supports McCain, he was also one of the signers of the anti-gay marriage petition there in Florida. It's unfortunate that he was somewhat responsible for the crap that's happening there, both to him, and all of the good people who knew Bush was wrong for this country and economy back in 2000.

9. 78000 jobs lost doesn't mean jack sh*t. Hurricanes generate many jobs and Florida hasn't had any...
lately. Of course the home construction jobs are off but lots of those workers are illegal aliens anyway. Tourism is where the big losses are and that will only get worse as fuel costs continue to rise.

11. bush* and Governor Bush dumped a lot of $$$ into Florida after the 2004 hurricanes
That meant lots of jobs and nobody unhappy about the lack of progress on hurricane recovery.

All funded by you and me--and loans from China and Japan.

12. i've been wondering this for MONTHS - why is TEXAS fairing so well?
my friends and family are spread out all over - big cities (Houston, Dallas) to rural east Texas.

we're paying the same high gas and grocery prices...i have seen more people walking and biking...but overall, retail is up, home prices are up, sales have slowed some in bigger cities, but just had a report on Austin sales that the turnover went UP the last quarter.

every list of 'bests' for months now - "best places to live" "best places to work" "best economies" "best place to raise a family" - Texas has had at least 3-4 cities in the top 10, some combo of Houston, Dallas, Austin, San Antonio, and often includes specific 'burbs of all these places: Round Rock, Denton, Plano, Sugarland, etc.

while i have been counting our blessings, i have also been trying to figure out WHY?? as the country just gets worse and worse...we're just...making slight adjustments (i.e., i bike for errands w/in 3 mile radius), but mostly going about life pretty close to normal.

so...do y'all think it's mostly b/c of OIL? is so much money being made in the Texas economy b/c of how screwed the rest of the country is getting?? :\

that can't just be it, can it?

in my darkest thoughts...i think that b/c Texas is Bush's 'home', he made some sort of deal w/ the devil that while the rest of the country goes to the crapper, Texas will survive...

but that's just crazy talk, right? RIGHT?? :tinfoilhat:
