FDA Finds Salmonella Strain in Jalapeno Pepper
Source: ABC News

Government inspectors finally have a big clue in the nationwide salmonella outbreak: They found the same bacteria on a single Mexican-grown jalapeno pepper handled by a small Texas produce shipper.

But Monday's discovery doesn't solve the mystery: Authorities don't know where the pepper became tainted — on the farm, or in the plant in McAllen, Texas, or at some stop in between.

Nor are they saying the tainted pepper exonerates tomatoes sold earlier in the spring that consumers until last week had been told were the prime suspect.

Still, "this genetic match is a very important break in the case," said Dr. David Acheson, the Food and Drug Administration's food safety chief.

2. Does salmonella make your ass burn?
If so, I think I have it.

Ate a pepperoni, jalapeno, and habanero pizza last night.

4. Just eat ice cream for desert.
:) I will tell you, though, the worst thing I ever ate was Zatarain's red beans and rice. The after effects were bad, and I had to sleep in the spare room. If I hadn't, I would have a divorce on my hands. Could have peeled wall paper with what I was putting out. I have never had gas and burn like I did with that- which I can't understand, as I eat jalapenos and habaneros all the time (this is Texas, after all).

9. I only put that out there
as a public service. The stuff tastes good, but the married man should realize his wife won't appreciate it. It did bring good laughs (to me anyway), after dropping some silent but deadlies in the pilot lounge (then running for it).

10. Not quite.
s/he forgot Epazote
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Epazote

Culinary uses

Epazote is used as a leaf vegetable and herb for its pungent flavor. Raw, it has a resinous, medicinal pungency, similar to the liquorice taste of anise, fennel, or even tarragon, but stronger. Epazote's fragrance is strong, but difficult to describe. It has been compared to citrus, petroleum, savory, mint and putty.

Although it is traditionally used with black beans for flavor and its antiflatulent properties, it is also sometimes used to flavor other traditional Mexican dishes as well: it can be used to season quesadillas and sopes (especially those containing huitlacoche), soups, mole de olla, tamales with cheese and chile, chilaquiles, eggs and potatoes and enchiladas.

6. this single jalapeno pepper cries out for an Onion article
with hundreds of folks getting salmonella year after year every year in this country since records began, that poor little pepper looks pretty lonely to me.
