Bush law chief seeks new Qaeda war declaration
Source: Reuters

Congress should explicitly declare war against al Qaeda to make clear the United States can detain suspected members as long as the conflict lasts, U.S. Attorney General Michael Mukasey said on Monday.

In an Administration full of stupid-ass ideas, this has got to be the most idiotic thing I've ever heard of. I swear to God, if Congress goes along with this I will never, EVER vote for any candidate willing to call himself a Democrat.

2. It's really pretty frightening....
Making it a declared war would effectively give the White House a blank check to detain and interrogate anybody they damned well please. I say again, if this Congress is fool enough to go along with this, I'm done with them.

4. I think they are less concerned about the interrogation
blank check then they are about the war funding blank check.

3. So does that mean that the AG and the WH concede that until Congress
passes such a law, that it is illegal to indefinitely hold an individual without right of a trial?

7. Probably not.
Mukazey (sp) is not an idiot like Gonzales. His tracks are undoubtedly well covered.

Any argument for admission would be countered by reams of paper and testimony that this was either a "belt and suspenders" operation or meant to relate to further action not necessarily covered by currently asserted theories of the legality of the wars in Iraq and Afghanistan.

13. A double edged sword for the malAdministration:
Sure, it would allow them to blur the intel, state that al Qaeda is operating where ever they want to get their war on, but... 'war' would also clearly mean "Geneva" and the torture perps would be liable in a world court.

Terrorists turned enemies of war by some edict? bushco would have some explaining to do at the Hague and no fine print to parse.
