McCain denies he misstated timing of Iraq surge
Edited on Wed Jul-23-08 04:06 PM by margotb822
Source: AP

BETHLEHEM, Pa. - Republican John McCain is pushing back against Democratic criticism that he misstated the timing of the buildup of troops ordered by President Bush in early 2007. He says parts of the new strategy began months earlier.

The Arizona senator has told reporters during a stop at a super market in Bethlehem, Pa., that what the Bush administration calls "the surge" was actually "made up of a number of components." McCain says some components of the surge began before Bush ordered more U.S. troops into Iraq.

McCain says U.S. Col. Sean MacFarland started carrying out elements of a new counterinsurgency strategy as early as December 2006.

Too bad the Anbar Awakening still happened before Dec 2006. That doesn't help his timeline problem. But, I supposed we're to infer that McCain was somehow involved in these high level strategic talks?? Haha, yea, right. The Straight Talk Express takes a huge round-about detour...destination unknown.

3. It depends on the definition of surge
BUT if you can have a surge without adding more troops, then why did we need more troops?

...as in "Serge Chaloff," well-known jazz baritone saxophonist.

There's probably a logical explanation.

It was Phil Gramms job to keep them stocked.

11. Did it start in 2003 with the invasion?
'what the Bush administration calls "the surge" was actually "made up of a number of components."'

Or did it start when Dubya did his "Mission Accomplished" photo op on the aircraft carrier?

17. "...some components of the surge began before Bush ordered more U.S. troops into Iraq."
So the "surge" began before it was even called the "surge?" I'm very confused about this. Wasn't the ordering of more troops into Iraq by Bush referred to as "the surge?" And, if so, then how could we have a "surge" before we had a "surge?"

20. Oh, so McCain excuses himself from admitting what IS true about the surge
Edited on Wed Jul-23-08 05:29 PM by Waiting For Everyman
But Obama is supposed to admit (because McCain says so) what ISN'T true about it.

Both CBS and McCain need to be pinned to the mat on this.

Also, I'd like to see someone bring up McCain's sellout of the POW/MIAs at the 1992 hearings. And his support for torture. How does that wash with his acclaim as a POW? He's the opposite of a hero to me, and I'm the recent widow of a 100% disabled VN vet who was briefly a POW too. I watched with my husband, every minute of those hearings, and McCain is no hero.

See below what Rep. Bob Dornan (R-CA) and Sen. Bob Smith (R-NH) and the top hearing staffers, and POW families have to say about his obstruction then... while he was in the safety of a Senate hearing room, in no danger whatsoever...
