Protesters denounce Fox News as racist
Source: Reuters

NEW YORK, July 23 (Reuters) - Protesters gathered on Wednesday outside Fox News Channel to denounce what they claim is its racist campaign coverage, including a pundit who called Democratic presidential hopeful Barack Obama a terrorist.

The crowd of some 150 people wielded a petition with more than 600,000 signatures objecting to news coverage by Fox, owned by Rupert Murdoch's News Corp (NWSa.N: Quote, Profile, Research, Stock Buzz), organizers said.

Another anchor called a televised fist bump between Obama and his wife a "terrorist fist jab," they said, and talk show host Bill O'Reilly discussed calling a "lynching party" to deal with Michelle Obama after criticizing her patriotism.

"Putting racism on national television and calling it news is never funny," said Andre Banks of ColorOfChange.

3. their sponsors are incidental....
the mafia runs what's known as a 'protection racket' which means businesses pay for nothing in effect (nothing happens to them or their property) and they keep paying, cuz it's cheaper then getting burned out...it's sorta the same idea with foxnews and limbah oreilly hannazi and so on, ie the corpmedia. The boors fill the air with certain type of politics, which serves certain corporate interest by deflecting attention from important stuff. Even if the media biz could make more money promoting a liberal viewpoint, they don't because the real money is in military spending, in the stock market, oil war and drugs etc....these crooks spend vast sums to subsidise reactionary media (which also acts to force the rest to the far right) ..for example, rev moon has lost money on almost every publication he owns, but he's alot richer now then even 10 years ago, thanks to the misinformed public ...thus rush limbah doesn't even need sponsors, though the few they have does act as cover for the fact they are part of a protection racket (protected from the public being informed as to true state of affairs)

4. Ohh I agree....
But if you listed to El Drugbo, half of his show is nothing but commercials. There is hardly any content. The guy will rant for 30sec before he goes to an ad then the news. Not only can I not stand listening to him talk about politics, but it's simply a waste of time having to listen to all the fluff in the middle.

31. Well said
This is always the strategic disadvantage Dems face: right-wing boycotts of media produce results because there's no corporate money to serve as a buffer to losses from pulled sponsors; progressive boycotts of the right's slanderous disinformation have limited effect because propaganda is a cost the rich and powerful are willing to subsidize.

37. Our greatest challenge is media fairness.
There is no question about it. Misinformation is repeated 24/7. Is it any wonder the electorate is so ignorant?

16. fox noise sponsor list?
I'd be happy to boycott all of Fox's sponsors ... except that I never watch
them so I don't know who they are!

Is there a list someplace on the web? Possibly sorted by the $$ they
contribute to the liars?

I don't have cable, so while I'm not subjected to Fux News, it's also difficult to find out who their sponsors are.

22. Ownership (Rupert Murdoch) drives content on FOX, not sponsors.
Murdoch is to FOX what Steinbrenner is to the Yankees, "The guy with the gold makes the rules!"

29.  On Australian Rupert Murdoch
http://www.americanprogress.org/issues/2004/07/b122948.html

In recent years, Australian-born billionaire Rupert Murdoch has used the U.S. government's increasingly lax media regulations to consolidate his hold over the media and wider political debate in America. Consider Murdoch's empire: According to Business Week, "his satellites deliver TV programs in five continents, all but dominating Britain, Italy, and wide swaths of Asia and the Middle East. He publishes 175 newspapers, including the New York Post and The Times of London. In the U.S., he owns the Twentieth Century Fox Studio, Fox Network, and 35 TV stations that reach more than 40% of the country...His cable channels include fast-growing Fox News, and 19 regional sports channels. In all, as many as one in five American homes at any given time will be tuned into a show News Corp. either produced or delivered." But who is the real Rupert Murdoch? As this report shows, he is a far-right partisan who has used his empire explicitly to pull American political debate to the right. He is also an enabler of the oppressive tactics employed by dictatorial regimes, and a man who admits to having hidden money in tax havens. In short, there more to Rupert Murdoch than meets the eye.

.............

Unbelievable! Disgusting! Disheartening!

All in the name of "fair and balanced"!

34. more on Murdoch
http://www.scripophily.net/foxtestinde1.html

Murdoch made his first acquisition in the United States in 1973, when he purchased the San Antonio Express-News. Soon afterwards, he founded Star, a supermarket tabloid, and in 1976, he purchased the New York Post. On September 4, 1985, Murdoch became a naturalized citizen, to satisfy the legal requirement that only US citizens could own American television stations. In 1987, in Australia, he bought The Herald and Weekly Times Ltd., the company that his father had once managed. By 1991, his Australian-based News Corp. had amassed huge debts, which forced Murdoch to sell many of the American magazine interests he had acquired in the mid-80s. Much of this debt came from his British-based satellite network Sky Television, which incurred massive losses in its early years of operation, which (like many of his business interests) was heavily subsidized with profits from his other holdings, until he was able to force rival satellite operator British Satellite Broadcasting to accept a merger on his terms in 1990. (The merged company, BSkyB, has dominated the British pay-TV market ever since.)

In 1995, Murdoch's Fox Network became the object of scrutiny from the Federal Communications Commission (FCC), when it was alleged that News Ltd.'s Australian base made Murdoch's ownership of Fox illegal. The FCC, however, ruled in Murdoch's favor, stating that his ownership of Fox was in the public's best interests. In the same year, Murdoch announced a deal with MCI Communications to develop a major news website, as well as funding a conservative magazine, The Weekly Standard. In the same year, News Corp. launched the Foxtel pay television network in Australia, in a partnership with Telstra.

In 1996, Murdoch chose to enter the world of cable news with the Fox News Channel, a 24-hour cable news station. Following its launch, the heavily-funded Fox News consistently eroded CNN's market share, and eventually proclaimed itself as "the most-watched cable news channel." This is due in part to recent ratings studies, released in the fourth quarter of 2004, showing that the network had nine of the top ten programs in the "Cable News" category. However, in recent years, ratings of Fox News have begun a declining trend.<1>

12. Wait a minute - Juan Williams and a black woman were on O'Lielly tonight about the purity of Faux.
They were appalling, and O'Lielly sat there with his smug grin listening to them praise Faux to the hilt and blame MoveOn.org for racism.

Sellouts. I have come to despise Juan Williams, and I was once an admirer. But he has sold his soul for 30 pieces of silver.
