Randy Pausch, noted CMU prof, succumbs to cancer
Source: Pittsburgh Post-Gazette

Randy Pausch, the Carnegie Mellon University computer science professor whose final lecture inspired millions, has died of pancreatic cancer.

Dr. Pausch, 47, who turned the lecture into a book, said that no one would have been interested in his words of wisdom were he not a man in his 40s with a terminal illness, leaving behind a wife and three young children.

According to Dr. Pausch's Web site, a biopsy last week revealed that the cancer had progressed further than expected, based on recent PETscans.

"Since last week, Randy has also taken a step down and is much sicker than he had been," the Web site said. "He's now enrolled in hospice. He's no longer able to post here so I'm a friend posting on his behalf because we know that many folks are watching this space for updates."

Thank you Dr. Pausch for taking the time to lecture us.

My prayers for your family - rest peacefully.

4. I had hoped that he would be able to pull a miracle out and live long enough
to be with his kids as they grew up.

What a wonderful wise man he was.

The best of us seem to die young.

My sincere sympathies to his family for their loss.

8. Prof whose "last lecture" became a sensation dies
Source: Associated Press

Randy Pausch, the Carnegie Mellon University computer scientist whose "last lecture" about facing terminal cancer became an Internet sensation and a best-selling book, died Friday. He was 47.

Pausch died at his home in Chesapeake, Va., said Jeffrey Zaslow, a Wall Street Journal writer who co-wrote Pausch's book. Pausch and his family had moved there last fall to be closer to his wife's relatives.

Pausch was diagnosed with incurable pancreatic cancer in September 2006. His popular last lecture at Carnegie Mellon in September 2007 garnered international attention and was viewed by millions on the Internet.

10. A truly heroic person
He could have quietly accepted his diagnosis and we would have never heard from him. Instead he chose to share and make the most of his time. May we all be able to summon that type of courage.

12. So sad. RIP, Randy. One of many people's fondest wishes in life and death
is that they make a difference on this earth. You did that, sir.....a thousand fold. Your inspiration and example will live on. My fondest condolences to all you were close to and left behind. Your amazing approach to life and death I'm sure will ease their pain, too.
