Senate energy speculation bill fails key vote

U.S. legislation to rein in excessive energy speculation failed a key procedural vote on Friday to move forward in the Senate, and now lawmakers will set aside the bill to consider other legislation.

The House of Representatives may take up its own anti-speculation bill next week, and then lawmakers will get ready to leave for their month-long recess in August.

5. because thanks to the
capitulation collaboration by our leadership, the GOP no longer has to actually filibuster. We just take a vote, and they defeat it without having to do the actual work.

8. that's not true
if the democrats voted against cloture when they were in the minorty, I recall that it was called a filibuster. I believe there has been a change in reporting conventions.

22. Unfortunately, Congressional Dems have proven not to be very smart
and appear to be allowing Republicans to coopt the issue with demogoguery over drilling and environmental regulation.

10. Just like what I expected....
Harry Reid should be dragged out of the senate and tarred and feathered for his vote. I can't understand what his motivation is behind his vote. Nice to see Olympia Snowe is being reasonable though.

11. Oh, COME ON!!!
Reid voted against only to be able to bring it up to a vote again. It's standard Senate procedure, happens all the time.

14. Exactly as I said
in a cloture vote, the Senate leader can change his vote to a NO when he sees that there will not be enough votes to invoke cloture, and this supposedly allows him to try again later. What is the logic behind this, I have no idea. I did not follow the vote, but I am sure that Reid first voted yes, and than changed it at the very end, I saw it happen in the past. And apologies if my previous post was somewhat snarky :-).

I believe that the rise in oil prices is mainly due to peak oil with a smaller percentage being due to speculation.

17. forgive me, but I question your sincerity

after writing "Harry Reid should be dragged out of the senate and tarred and feathered for his vote. I can't understand what his motivation is behind his vote. Nice to see Olympia Snowe is being reasonable though", you now, after finding out what his motivation was, write a post that suggests that the legislation was in some way beside the point.

Nice use of "peak oil." We lefties really go for that one. Next time try to use "election fraud" or "impeachment." Other words that renders us senseless.

18. And I question yours....
Sorry, I call them like I see them and if I make a mistake I have no problem admitting them. I assess the issues on the facts and don't get caught up in looking for boogeymen in the shadows. Waste of time and waste of energy.

you don't even claim to have a basis, you just say it. It doesn't have to make sense, you just say it.
