Obama visits doctor to treat sore hip
Source: Yahoo News

CHICAGO - Barack Obama, back in his home town after a tour of Afghanistan, the Middle East and Europe, saw a doctor at the University of Chicago Medical Center on Sunday night to deal with a sore hip.

"His hip has been sore from basketball for a few weeks, so he's going to see an orthopedic doctor," Obama spokesman Robert Gibbs said.

As he left the hospital, Obama told reporters: "I had small X-rays. Everything's OK. I think I'm going to be good in about a week."

Obama is a lifelong basketball player, and he squeezes in a game every now and then on the campaign trail. At one stop during his overseas trip, he shot baskets with U.S. troops in Afghanistan.

2. I'd bet too all those plane seats and strange beds didn't help
It may be he tweaked it and with the stress of campaigning and trying to fit in exercise he's not letting it rest and heal.

4. Those damn plane seats - esp for a tall person - must be a killer...
Edited on Mon Jul-28-08 01:04 AM by Triana
..of course he may have been in first class and I'm sure his campaign plane is comfy. But all that traveling is hard on a body - esp if there's a little injury or sickness there to start with.

I hope he's OK. Needs some rest. Good food. VERY MILD workouts for a week or so. Or - whatever the doc said.

Poor (almost)President Beanpole! He's gettin gray hair and falling apart and he's not even the Prez yet! ;)

Edit: I'd recommend some restorative yoga. ;)

3. Sciatica from sitting so long in airplanes and other places?
I know great exercises for sciatica (gets rid of it every time) and arthritis in the sacroiliac (hip). Could be early arthritis. Could simply be an injury. If he had sciatica really severely, he would be limping or not walking at all.

18. It's hard to explain.
You need a couch or bed that is open on one side with plenty of room between the bed and any object or wall on the side you will use. Lie on the couch or bed with your face pointed away from the side of the couch or bed and the leg/hip that has the sciatica under the "good" leg. The leg/hip with the sciatica is lying directly on the couch or bed. Slowly (it will hurt a lot), bend the knee of the leg/hip with the sciatica out off the side of the couch or bed into the open air toward your back. Reach the hand that is on top of your body back to grab your foot and bring it up and back toward your back. The leg with the sciatica is free in the air more or less with your hand holding it up. Repeat this until the pain is gone. Be gentle. Don't do anything to drastically.

The first couple of times you do this, it will hurt immensely (at least it does for me), but do it until it does not hurt.

Be sure you have not broken your hip or leg. That is, if you have sciatica following hours of sitting in a car or plane, you can be pretty sure you have no broken bones. But, if you have just had quite a fall, you should see a doctor. Obviously if it persists, see a doctor.

You can take pain medicine in addition to this, Ibuprofen or something, but I find this exercise works better than pain medicines. It sort of makes your muscles do the opposite of what you usually do or have been doing too much of. I get sciatica from sitting too much. I know exactly how I injured myself many years ago and why I get it. This exercise is the only thing that has really helped me.

19. I've never tried those things. They might work. I don't know.
Usually, I am in too much pain to get into a bathtub when I have the sciatica. It is really horrible.

11. Any kind of exercise wears on the hips and legs
We are machines that wear out. However, those who do a lot of repetitive stress tend to wear out faster. Look at the athletes whose careers are over before they're thirty.

12. Falling on the hardwood can give hip pointers and broken bones.
There's no indication what kind of basketball injury is being referred to, but hips are just as vulnerable to injury as any other part of the anatomy.

15. When you are his age is certainly can.....
it happened to me when I was in my thirties. I'm sure there are those who can play all kind of sports and never have a problem their entire life, and then others who might experience various problems at a younger age....we are all different.

7. Couldn't the hip have been bumped or hit hard while playing
basketball? Did he get knocked over or fall? Somebody guarding him, or vice versa? Basketball does have *some* contact, especially when the guys (or gals) are feeling enthusiastic and competitive. :)

Plus all the travel, stress and lack of rest/sleep, may interfere with normal healing and tissue repair.

Of course, it could be something else altogether and basketball is the cover story...

8. My theory is that its a sex injury...
The guy has been away from his wife for almost 2 weeks... they had some making up to do.. Probably got a bit wild.. and he injured himself.. Now, if we see Michelle walking like she just took a Bull Ride, I guess my theory will hold water.. LOL.

I think a little hip injury is minor compared to McGrumps and his many illness issues.

9. I HATE HAVING TO PUT A SUBJECT HERE
I thought he looked like he was limping a little after that speech in Berlin. I'm sure people see that and think he is walking with a cockyness though.

10. I thought he was limping when he talked to Brian Williams, too.
He also told the troops something about 'next time when my hip is better' when he was shooting hoops with them.

20. Thought it sounded better, than a basketball injury.. These are all just
who knows speculation... I'm sure he'll recover.. at least it nice to know he can still most likely function without using Viagra like McCain.. which is what he probably uses, considering he was embarrassed when the media asked him about B.C. and Viagra and not being covered by insurance companies... He figured the gig was up; someone leaked that he was using Viagra.
