Study: 'Pre-dementia' is rising, especially in men
Source: Associated Press

CHICAGO - A milder type of mental decline that often precedes Alzheimer's disease is alarmingly more common than has been believed, and in men more than women, doctors reported Monday.
Nearly a million older Americans slide from normal memory into mild impairment each year, researchers estimate, based on a Mayo Clinic study of Minnesota residents.

That's on top of the half million Americans who develop full-blown Alzheimer's or other forms of dementia — a problem sure to grow as baby boomers age. The oldest boomers turn 62 this year.
"We're seeing that in fact there's a much larger burgeoning problem out there" of people at risk of developing dementia, said Dr. Ronald Petersen, the Mayo scientist who led the study.

.....
Petersen is the scientist who defined mild cognitive impairment, or MCI, as a transition phase between healthy aging and dementia. It is more than "senior moments" like forgetting where you parked the car, but not as severe as having dementia, where you forget what a car is for.

......
Men were nearly twice as likely as women to develop it. That's a surprise, because some studies have found more women with Alzheimer's than men. But there may be a simple explanation:
Even though more men may be impaired, women outlive them and therefore have more time to develop full-blown dementia.

Am I terrible because this made me think of McCain? I truly don't think his brain/memory is all there anymore.

I think his competence for the job of Prez is really a big issue.

that dumping millions of tons of neurotoxic chemicals on a society would have negative effects.

(and that's the short list) filling the skies with miasma fog...you can thank the US Military's Weather Warfare and Modification Program for this.

6. Oh, Yes, People Salivate At the Thought of Boomers Suffering
It is disgusting. One more sign of how sick society is.

Well, I've got news for them. Anything that happens to the Boomers is going to be much worse for smaller cohorts, because they won't have the numbers to protect their interests....

7. Hay, Mr Mc Same, read this, you might just want to retire to one of
your 13 homes before full blown dementia develops. At least you will remember your retirement. The alternative is no memory at all. AAAh, maybe that is what you are aiming for. A chance to forget all the damage you have done. You cannot build your legacy on being a POW. That is sad but does not make you presidential material. Too late, you missed that part of school.

Go home, have a nice senior rest. Let the rest of us seniors work like hell to pay the incredible price of gas, let alone try to figure out how to keep warm this winter.

You'll never have to worry about dementia. By the time you have a full blown case, it will not matter. You won't know it.

In this one case, quit while you are ahead.

8. Just think how far gone mccain'll be in four years.
Edited on Tue Jul-29-08 06:39 AM by mwb970
This man is mentally deficient, in the standard Republican mold. Reagan had Alzheimer's, bush is a "dry drunk", and now they run a guy who was tortured for five years, breaking his brain, and is now going senile.

Al Gore would have been a great president, but we got bush instead. John Kerry would have been a great president, but we got bush instead, again. Barack Obama would be a great president, but apparently we are planning to elect bush yet again.

America has a death wish. Our citizenry has become too stupid and too religious to allow the country to survive as a super-power, or perhaps to survive at all. The 35% (50%? 90%?) who are total idiots are dragging the rest of us down.

edit: typo

19. To be fair to my Fella Murkins, we *didn't* elect Bush either time. The elections were stolen...
The 2000 election, mediated by the Supreme Court, was effectively a coup d'etat.

Just setting the record straight. Slightly more of us are informed and aware than otherwise.

11. well i think mccain has more than predementia
Edited on Wed Jul-30-08 03:29 PM by pitohui
i think he must have already had mini strokes or be in early stages of alzheimer's or another form of dementia

he's closer to "doesn't always remember what the car is for" than just forgetting where the car is parked -- and we're talking about a media that routinely scrubs the worst of it, look at all the cover-up of *'s obvious symptoms of mental decline

even without an exact diagnosis he doesn't need to be in a leadership position IMHO

16. Men twice as likely as women? Check the gov't stats for beef consumption
Pounds per capita, by age group:
12-19: Men 95, Women 56
20-39: Men 109, Women 52
40-59: Men 89, Women 49

Now, let's talk about how safe our untested meat supply is from Mad Cow Disease?

18. What a silly term.... Carlin would have a field day with this....

"Pre-Dementia" literally mean "before dementia".

All of us are in a state of "pre-dementia".

Just like we're in a state of "pre-death".

Carlin reference:
Kind of like "pre-boarding" a plane... does that mean you get on the plane BEFORE you get on the plane?

20. Sadly, this is making me think of a man I know in his early 50's, whose brain is aging faster...
... than expected. His doc said his functions looked normal -- for a man of 80. At a minimum he is at risk for stroke. Neurologist appointment next month.
