Former JPMorgan executive arrested in Argentina
Source: Reuters

NEW YORK, July 29 (Reuters) - A former JPMorgan Chase & Co (JPM.N: Quote, Profile, Research, Stock Buzz) private banking executive has been arrested in Argentina on charges of embezzling about $5.4 million from bank clients.

Hernan Arbizu was charged in 15-count indictment unsealed in U.S. District Court in New York. He was arrested on Monday in Buenos Aires and is being held by Argentine authorities, pending extradition, the U.S. Attorney's Office in Manhattan said.

The indictment contends Arbizu, 41, engaged in a scheme to withdraw funds from bank customers without their knowledge through the use of unauthorized wire transfers. The U.S. government is also seeking the forfeiture of the roughly $5.4 million it contends was embezzled.

3. Arbizu must have fled before the memo was issued
Argentina isn't the place to go anymore; Paraguay will be the new haven for criminals of all stripes. You'll still need a pass to get into the Bush family compound, though.

4. Not anymore - upset left-wing victory puts future extradition (and Bush compound) in limbo...
Yet another country has made a left-turn in Latin America: in an unprecedented election yesterday, Paraguay's opposition candidate, progressive former-bishop Fernando Lugo, defeated government-backed Blanca Ovelar by more than ten points. The win ends a six-decade-long reign over the country by Paraguay's right-wing Colorado party. FSRN's Mike Fox has more from Asuncion, Paraguay.

Another right wing domino fell and a left wing radical rose as Paraguay witnessed the triumph of Fenando Lugo, a suspended bishop, won the presidecny. Paraguay had been ruled for over sixty years by the conservatve Partido Colorado but the people of the land locked nation moved to the left in search of new leadership. Lugo represents a milder form of the liberation theory which arose in more liberal components of the Catholic church. South America has witnessed several victories by those espousing more radical economic and social ideas, but Lugo is regarded as less anti-American and less hostile to the middle class or busness community.

His victory represents a crushing blow to the conservative Colorado Party as Lugo will fight for new legislation benefiting the majority of people in Paraguan society. He brings a liberal “religious” element to the government which has concern for the plight of poor peple and he will most probably secure financial support from radical leaders such as President Hugo Chavez of Venezuela. However, Lugo will most probably govern in the milder left wing model of Lula da Silva from Brazil.

6. Amazing, the effect CIA blundering has had in actually inspiring Democratic values!
Read 'Legacy of Ashes' by Tim Weiner for an astonishing look into CIA incompetence and the global impact of their blunders.

7. Some of you may have seen "The Good Shepherd,"
directed by Robert De Niro, starring Matt Damon. It's not a really "great" movie but it shows the machinations of CIA operatives and their targets in detail. The upshot: everybody is triangulating to ensure a certain outcome in the future, but since everybody is outguessing and outmaneuvering everyone else and the stakes are often incredibly high, the results of these manipulations actually become impossible to predict.

IOW, the CIA is the disease it purports to cure.
