U.S. Army deserter caught at Ontario border crossing
Source: Canadian Press

FORT ERIE, Ont. — An American man wanted in the U.S. on desertion charges who had apparently been living for months in Canada has been arrested while trying to cross the border back into the U.S.

American customs officials apprehended 23-year-old Tyrone Pachauer of Deltona, Fla., at the Peace Bridge border crossing in Fort Erie, Ont., as he tried to cross into Buffalo, N.Y., on Monday.

... He was handed over to Buffalo police and is expected to be extradited to Kentucky to face the desertion charge.

1. Desertion carries a death sentence.
I hope he had a REAL good excuse, for his sake.

6. Alright, you can stop with that. It's sensationalism for no reason.
Since 2000, more than 40,000 US troops have deserted.

I think the longest sentence any of them has gotten so far is 18 months, which is shorter than some of the tours in Iraq.

it's illegal for a man to scowl at his wife on a Sunday.

But when I see a guy do that, I don't go into handwringing mode, hoping he doesn't get prosecuted, because despite the law being in writing and all, the REALITY is that we don't prosecute for that.

It's more honest to portray reality instead of resorting to fear mongering. The reality is that in the last 40,000 deserters (since 2000, so these are recent) there has not even been any considering of execution. I know that, you know that. So your "concern" is suspect.

I know my motive for being blunt about the reality of what happens when you desert. My motive is to ensure that those who are considering it have a REALISTIC idea of the consequences so they can make an informed decision. I don't know what your motive would be in exaggerating the risks.

If you were simply ignorant of how deserters are being treated, you're forgiven for that - but "up yours" isn't an appropriate response to someone who corrects you if you are misinformed. If you knew the facts and chose to misrepresent them in a pretense you are concerned they'll be executed, I'd like to know what your motive was.

10. I'd like to offer an apology for my post to you.
I was suffering a massive headache and was a bit out of it, and I regret making an unnecessary and uncalled for remark like that.

11. ha, no problem, and thanks.
I've made some headache induced posts over the years. :)

I hope you are feeling better by now.

I tend to cheer for people who decide to desert (and who speak out against the war - not like Bush, I mean, who loves war when others are fighting it). So I do get a little bent out of shape and belligerent if they are led to believe the consequences are beyond what they really are.
