Congress to probe [Super] Bowl act
http://www.thehill.com/news/020304/superbowl.aspx

The chairmen of the House and Senate subcommittees with jurisdiction over the Federal Communications Commission (FCC) expressed shock and outrage at Janet Jackson’s briefly exposed right breast as a part of Sunday’s Super Bowl halftime show.

The circumstances of Jackson’s exposed anatomy will receive a further airing at hearings later this month in both the House and Senate.

Prior to the widely watched incident, Rep. Fred Upton (R-Mich.) had introduced the Broadcast Decency Enforcement Act of 2004, H.R. 3717, which would impose a 10-fold increase in the current penalty caps for indecency on television. But the exposed breast will receive another round of scrutiny when the House Energy and Commerce Committee considers the bill later this month, said Upton’s spokesman, Sean C. Bonyum.

On the Senate side, a Feb. 11 hearing in the Commerce Committee on its own obscenity bill will provide a forum for appalled lawmakers to register their concerns.

21. They are saving money this way
Squandering resources and funds from the public trust into things like this, corporations are saving a mint. They won't have to worry about all them scandles like Tyco, Enron and Haliburton getting investigated to closely. (If one had enough time and money several of these cesspools could be linked together, showing how they really just one and the same of the ole boys network)

The Need for International Regulation of Auditors and Public Companies
by Kern Alexander, CBR and Judge Institute of Management

The scandals and misconduct at major US corporations have exposed major weaknesses in the legal and regulatory standards of corporate governance in the United States. Financial mismanagement and fraudulent earnings misstatements at major public companies, such as Enron, WorldCom, Tyco, Adelphia and a host of other companies have wiped away hundreds of billions of $US from the value of investment funds. These vast losses impact not only wealthy investors in mutual funds managed by leading investment banks, but also individual retirement accounts and small company pension plans. The global operations of many of these corporations have also put other economies at risk and in particular foreign investors who have become major investors in US companies in recent years with the result that corporate and auditor wrongdoing in the US will result in great losses for many non-US investors who put great faith in the accuracy of US company reports. Indeed, the call for a new system of audit regulation and tougher penalties for corporate wrongdoing can be heard not only in the US, but also in other important financial markets. The global operations of most publicly listed companies means that their corporate management practices and financial health can impact economies around the globe. Thus, the recent scandals on Wall Street demand not only reform of US corporate governance and auditor standards but also of international standards in these areas.
(snip)

P.s. to think the bought and paid for republican Congress was ever going to investigate and do anything about anything substantial is such a joke on so many levels.

Oh the shame - oh the pain, the hypocritical republicans must feel, here we are watching the most family oriented show on TV and someone shows some breast!!! How disgusting! I bet they will divert the money from the 9/11, pre-war, and CIA outing investigations, just get to the bottom of this outrage and insult to American morals.
Rush is probably so upset he had to snort twice his usual amount to stay high enough for his show.

What are the priorities of these Republicans? Are they going to ban breast feeding next?

For those in need of recollection of the Ashcroft farce, this is a good source:

And there are photos available all over the 'net.

What fools. But they are fools spending our money!

I watched the game but not the halftime & from what I've heard, another artist cut a hole in a flag and used it as a poncho. That is, definitely, flag desecration. Isn't that worse? Even in right-wing-whacko land????

But aren't we glad that CBS spared us from the controversial moveon and PETA ads!!!

Of course, it's going to be hard getting the boob on TV for the presidential debates, but we can worry about details later. Right now at this early stage, it's just important that the boob gets out, presses the flesh, and talks about the kind of leadership it will bring to our great nation.

75. I agree, they were in this together
What I meant was the atmosphere that the act was setting. The lyrics that he'll have her naked and the simulation of tearing off her clothing.

85. Most of the outrage I'm hearing
isn't directed at Timberlake; it's towards Jackson for daring to possess a breast (and a pierced one at that)! Most reich wingers see women as a source of temptation and evil; Jackson is the one being demonized here for allowing "good Christian men" to entertain impure thoughts. We're turning into another Nation ruled by the Taliban. :-(

63. Will the boob investigation be followed by a body cavity search?
Now that Ashcroft, Powell and the GOP congress are all aroused, who can blame them for wanting to go a little further with a bodycavity search of Janet Jackson?

Some alert Republicans are already speculating that deeper probing may finally locate Iraq's WMD, or at least Iraq's hidden plans for weapons programs.

Where are the embedded reporters when we need them, and how long must we wait before Bush alocates the fifty billion dollars needed for an independent investigation of this "person of interest?"

65. Ah, Republican Priorities
What a bunch of stinking hacks. I particularly love Michael "Baby Bell" Powell's comment:

Federal Communications Commission Chairman Michael Powell also promised further investigation, saying: “That celebration was tainted by a classless, crass and deplorable stunt.”

For the life of me I can't tell if he's talking about the Superbowl halftime show or his own pimp game to bend all of us over for his buddies at Verizon, SBC, and Qwest!

66. Goes to show you, Repukes can't kick a duck in the ass. . .
unless they stand on a brick to do it.

And even then, it's a 50/50 chance they'll miss the mark.

69. Violence good... Sexuality bad... that's all you need to know.
Technically, Janet didn't violate any media standards - her nip was covered. I remember seeing a movie on prime time network TV that showed a dancer wearing nothing but a bikini bottom and pasted-on tassles.

70. Jesus H. Jumping Christ! The Imperial Congress let the Busheviks
shred all the Plame evidence for 78 days.

They let the Imperial Family perform whatever confilct-of-interest and fruad and theft of the day while making nary a peep!

But Prince Powell has decreed, and when an Imperial Scion decrees, the Imperial Congress elbows each other out fo the way to see who can lick the most boot.

Disgusting.

What has happened to our once-free, once-proud nation as we wait for the other shoes (hell, the whole other shoestore) to drop?

71. Why is this worthy of a congressional investigation?
Surely there are more important things to investigate such as:

Halliburton overcharges
Outing a CIA agent
Cheney's secret meetings with energy industry
The whole Iraq fiasco

It goes to show you how shallow our Congress really is.

76. Are you kidding me?
Are you F*CKING KIDDING ME?

I realize I'm preaching to the choir here, but I am ASTOUNDED by the following!

Bonyum.<

Good God Almighty. Has this nation gone insane?

Is there anything, ANYTHING else we could all be focusing on right now? It's over. There is nothing else that they can do to make up for BoobGate. In the meantime, we have 44 million men, women and children without health insurance. There are 500+ dead from the Iraqi dustup, not to mention the thousands who were "merely" maimed or injured. We still have a catastrophically high unemployment rate.

We STILL have not received even the most basic of investigation results from the biggest intelligence breach in the history of this country!

None of it matters. Janet Jackson's breast was on display on live national television for possibly five seconds, and this means that we will have to go through investigation after investigation after investigation on the subject?!?

Hey ladies and gentlemen, I just had an idea: Go to your local department store. Buy a bra. (I think there's a sale right now at Target; they had 2 for $10 last week.) Pin a note to it about any issue you think is more egregious than Janet Jackson's naked breast. MAIL IT to your legislators.

If they're going to be obsessed with breasts, perhaps we need to send them a constant reminder of what kind of boobs we think they all are...

Julie

77. Yet they say nothing about the View...
Monday morning at 10am on the View one of the hosts pulls her shirt aside reveling a fake but VERY relistic looking breast. This is shown close up, well lit and seen for a good 30 seconds, not just a glimpse in the dark, yet nothing is said about this. The show's producer shown saying to stop showing it that it looked too real, and he was getting angry at her.

82. There is Only one Solution..
to this problem.

Surgically remove the breast for questioning. :(

Then demand a Grand jury 'Probe' of the said breast. It's the only way we will ever know for sure. :)

We need to push for the maximum sentence for this offending breast!

So let's all get 'behind' this 'probe' and be proud 'Patriots' and score a touchdown.

That failing we can just kick a Field goal. :)

Sorry, I just can't deal with this insanity anymore, this nation is out of control........ :(
