France 'considers Pinochet trial'
France 'considers Pinochet trial'
Last Updated: Tuesday, 3 February, 2004, 00:50 GMT

French Foreign Minister Dominique de Villepin has said France is considering trying Chile's former military ruler, Augusto Pinochet, in his absence.

Mr de Villepin said France could prosecute General Pinochet for human rights violations committed against French nationals during the 1970s.

He was speaking during a two-day visit to Chile.

Charges against Mr Pinochet, 88, were dropped in 2002 when Chile's highest court ruled him unfit to stand trial.

1. yet another reason for Kissinger to be afraid
since he can't go to France now or risk arrest for charges that he is a war criminal.

I'm all for a trial. Let's get a legal transcript which catalogues the abuses of the Pinochet govt, and which will surely include the involvement of America's supporters of dictators, like Kissinger.

A book, The Pinochet File, is currently available from the National Security Archive.

That could be a good source for evidence.
