Ohio Republicans may have misdirected federal campaign funds

August 26, 2008

COLUMBUS — The Ohio Secretary of State's office sent a letter to the state's Republican Party this week about campaign money that was misdirected, according to a 10TV.com report Tuesday.

In a letter to the party, Campaign Finance Administrator J. Curtis Mayhew said candidates for state office received nearly $500,000 that was meant only for Federal candidates.

The letter states that the party cannot give money to state candidates in this way.

"A state or county political party shall not disburse moneys from any account other than a state candidate fund to make contributions to a state candidate fund," the letter reads.

The letter also says the party must "refund these contributions."

A spokesman for the Republican Party disagreed, saying, "We're seeking a legal option. We feel federal funds can be spent on a statewide race."

5. Good news is the Repukes were diminished in Ohio
two years ago. Granted the House and Senate are still R controlled. But the Gov and most Mayors are Dems plus Sherrod Brown.

Money went to support Blackwell gubernatorial bid, GOP spokesman says
The Ohio Republican Party funneled $495,000 into an account used to support the candidacy of former Ohio Secretary of State Ken Blackwell that should have only been used to support candidates for national office, according to a letter from Ohio's current Secretary of State and a GOP spokesman.

The letter says Ohio's Republican party collected nearly half a million dollars from a federal GOP account in October 2006. They also took in $20,000 from a state GOP account the same month and another $25,000 in November 2007.

11. He was Sec of State at the time and should have known the laws....
As a treasurer for the Democratic Party from 1994-04, I can tell you, in Ohio, at least, there are four accounts that the party must keep segregated. The general operating fund, the Judicial Fund, the State Candidates Fund and the Federal Candidates Fund.

It's big time fine time and maybe jail if they choose to look at it as fraud.
