4. This is disgraceful on both sides.
Protesting is one thing, but actually trying to block the delegates? Damaging property? That is nothing but pointless.

If the police ARE arresting peaceful protesters, using pepper spray and denying medical attention, that is just horrific.

15. I saw no police violence today
I observed six arrests made. I did not see what triggered the apprehensions. But the police I saw handled the situations professionally and at no time did they exert unnecessary force.

I'm not saying this to refute anything Sushi Bandit has reported. It is obvious by police movement and traffic that weird activity is occurring throughout the city which I can't see. But all has been good in my little corner of the city.

But if someone damages property around here, I want them arrested.

18. Sorry to disappoint you
I'm not saying it was completely peaceful in St Paul today. But from what I saw in the 2-1/2 hours I watched the parade go by my home I saw a peaceful protest.

I later saw some people getting arrested, but there was no violence on either side.

I know all kinds of bad stuff happened all around downtown today. But from where I am located, I did not see any of it occur.

And finally, I live and work downtown here. If someone damages my place of business, damned straight I want them arrested. People have a right to protest, but they do not have a right to smash windows or damage property that is not theirs. If they break shit, they deserve to be arrested.

I think so. A woman was pepper sprayed right in the face, for putting flowers in their gun barrels. She walked away with her hands over her face, and they sprayed her again!

Edited on Mon Sep-01-08 09:27 PM by Generic Brad
Nothing like that happened in the area I could observe.

I agree with 95% of the protesters. OK?

But I did not witness any police brutality in over 2 and 1/2 hours. Why is that so hard to believe?

I am against police brutality and I am against the senseless destruction of property. Did both happen in my city today? Yes. Did I see it? No.

23. The parade route went around the building I live in
There were at least 70 policemen information at the corner of Minnesota and 7th forcing the protesters to go north on Minnesota. Everyone on both sides behaved themselves.

But after the parade was over there sure was a lot of movement by police and National Guard. It looked like there was something significant happening elsewhere. I just couldn't see what was going on anywhere else.

31. at their own peril
this reminds me of a post documented with scholarly sources that I read here years ago. The post said that as capitalism goes into its last throes, the more control the state will need to exercise over the citizens. The control actually hastens the downfall of the system, in this case capitalism.

We can see this happening now and we see it in particular with the republicans, as they are the most rabid supporters of capitalism.

41. Capitalism is a ruse
for theocratic, totalitarian oligarchy. Our media works in conjunction with what the rulers want reported.
We've been fighting these people since July 4, 1776 through the fascism of the 1930s. We can never really eliminate thugs disguised as political leaders, but we must do our best to hold them in check, and whenever possible, make them accountable as happened in Nuremberg following WW II.
Hand counted paper ballots would go a long way to restoring some faith in election results. The Taliban rely on a faith based system of governance, as does Bush's best friend, the Saudi Royal family.
As Hitler's Black Shirts replaced the Brown Shirts, our formerly blue shirted police are now wearing all black.

I'm sure that third amendment will disappear soon as police, national guard and the military are allowed told to sleep in your house to keep tabs on you.

What's the flushing sound I hear? It's the sound of America going down the drain? And what's that I don't hear? Outrage? Why? Because most of my country will gladly stay willfully ignorant or flat out ignorant because critical thought has all but been destroyed in this country.

37. And it's only been one day...
Seems slightly ironic that Limbaugh wanted riots at the DNC, to show people a calm and orderly RNC the following week... this is utterly deplorable, and no doubt Gustav and the following storms will blunt any actual coverage of this and similar events...

I'd rec as well, but, but I'm in the same boat as luv_mykatz...

48. Now what do you think the great unwashed will remember of the coverage ...?
> Seems slightly ironic that Limbaugh wanted riots at the DNC, to show
> people a calm and orderly RNC the following week...

This reminded me of a quote from Heinlein's Starship Troopers:

>> "But, Father, he doesn’t do that at all! He — " I stopped, not knowing
>> how to describe it. Mr. Dubois had a snotty, superior manner; he acted
>> as if none of us was really good enough to volunteer for service.
>> I didn’t like him. "Uh, if anything, he discourages it."
>> "Hmmph! Do you know how to lead a pig? ..."

DNC: Convention went almost without incident. There were a few opposition
protesters and some false alarms that were hyped at the time but nothing
significant. Lots of speeches and political razzmatazz. No response to
the scare-mongering about "riots in the street".

RNC: Convention impacted by Gustav but main publicity is the fuss being
made over the VP designate's family and the (apparent) rioting of the
opposition protesters.

Who do you think that Joe Sixpack will believe are putting up a electoral
facade supported by rowdy thugs and who would be the "ordinary folks"
that they can "identify with"?

Well... I'd like to think they could see the reality, but I got this little dialogue running through my mind now...

"Hey, Jimbo, Ya hear 'bout the Demmacrats conven-shun?"

"It went good, Billy-Bob?"

"Yessiree. And the Republican's are havin' all sortsa troubles with arrests and stuff at the conven-shun them's havin' right now!"

"Well, golly, they's just like us then! Remember at the family reunion when Uncle Joe-Jack got hisself arrested, and the entire neybahood showed up ta tell us ta turn down the Tim McGraw?"

"I know! I'm votin fer the old guy and the lady governor!"

End scene.

Ludicrous? Maybe, but remember, a lot people elected the shrub because 'he seemed like a guy ya could have a beer with', despite the fact that, as a recovering alcoholic, Bush wouldn't have been able to even be around liqour...

I apologize to any southerners who may have read this and felt offended.

47. There is no need to destroy to protest. You have a faction in St. Paul
who want to protect the city, but maybe it is to destroy to demonstrate power and send a message. I see the anarchists and the police as destroyers - no different from Cheney.

A certain faction getting their jollies while serious people TRY TO protest peacefully.

St. Paul and the people they let run the police are disgusting. I regret that they found so many police to act like Hitlers' Nazis. But, the anarchists jump started it. Who are they?

50. Anarchists or police plants?
There are certainly anarchists but the police have been known to infiltrate and incite confrontations, and I'll guaranty they do so with the full support and aid of other agencies as well as the Republican Party.

Police Infiltrate Protests, Videotapes Show
By JIM DWYER

Undercover New York City police officers have conducted covert surveillance in the last 16 months of people protesting the Iraq war, bicycle riders taking part in mass rallies and even mourners at a street vigil for a cyclist killed in an accident, a series of videotapes show.

In glimpses and in glaring detail, the videotape images reveal the robust presence of disguised officers or others working with them at seven public gatherings since August 2004.

The officers hoist protest signs. They hold flowers with mourners. They ride in bicycle events. At the vigil for the cyclist, an officer in biking gear wore a button that said, "I am a shameless agitator." She also carried a camera and videotaped the roughly 15 people present.

Beyond collecting information, some of the undercover officers or their associates are seen on the tape having influence on events. At a demonstration last year during the Republican National Convention, the sham arrest of a man secretly working with the police led to a bruising confrontation between officers in riot gear and bystanders.

Until Sept. 11, the secret monitoring of events where people expressed their opinions was among the most tightly limited of police powers.

Provided with images from the tape, the Police Department's chief spokesman, Paul J. Browne, did not dispute that they showed officers at work but said that disguised officers had always attended such gatherings - not to investigate political activities but to keep order and protect free speech. Activists, however, say that police officers masquerading as protesters and bicycle riders distort their messages and provoke trouble.

51. Three People Quickly Arrested in the Fourth Sector of St. Paul (for moving trash cans)
Source: Indy Media

Shortly after 11:00am on September 1st, three people were arrested in the streets of St. Paul near Seventh and Goodrich. This portion of town has been dubbed "Sector 4" by groups protesting in the streets on this first, and only, day of the Republican National Convention.

A group of people were followed by St. Paul police in their car. Some people in the group began to push garbage cans through down a residential street. More police quickly arrived on the scene, jumped out of a black tactical van, pepper sprayed the group and then tackled three people. Three people in the group were handcuffed, searched and taken away in the back of police cars.

67. Lyrics just for you! PERFECT song for this!

there's something happinin here
what it is aint exactly clear
theres a man with a gun over there
tellin me i got to beware

i think it's time we stop, children
what's that sound
everybody look what's goin down

there's battle lines being drawn
nobody's right if everybody's wrong
young people speakin there minds
getting so much resistance far behind

it's time we stop,
hey what's that sound
everybody look what's goin down

what a field day for the heat
a thousand people in the street
singin songs that they carry inside
mostly say hurray for our side

it's time we stop,
hey what's that sound
everybody look what's goin down

there are lawyer strikes deep
into your life it will creep
it starts when your always afraid
step out of line the man come and take you away

you better stop
hey what's that sound
everybody look what's going down x4

69. Rubber bullets & the end of free speech ...
From the Minneapolis Star-Tribune, 9/1/08:

"Just a few hours into the protest activity, city workers were ordered to shut down the free speech stage that was placed near the X. The stage was supposed to run for up to 12 hours a day during the convention as a forum for public sentiment. The workers would not say who ordered the shut-down or why."

83. I was in Miami during the FTAA protests. Persons dressed as black block were being ...
... dropped off at the demonstrations in police vans. That's right. I saw it with my own eyes.

Most of the black face mask and hooded instigators of violence were cops (or working with the cops).

The reason is to evoke the kind of response you have posted, and to "justify" the use of extreme anti protest tactics by authorities.

72. Will police or RWers hire agitators? Or, have they already?
They did in Canada and the police had to apologize in television.

They marked their own thugs on the bottom of shoes. They'd have all the protestors lie down, then they'd see the shoes and separate them.
