Amy Goodman Detained

Find More: 2008 Election Blog DN! Media Police

Getting word as it plays -- Amy Goodman and two other crew from DemocracyNow! are being detained by police for "probable cause for riot (?)." Happening now -- just got word. Phoned in to other DN! crew to see what we can do. Waiting to hear if it's an arrest or "detained." Should have a report on the live broadcast later today. Police scene here over the top. We chased the raids all day Saturday and I'll blog about some of that later. Meanwhile, in phone contact with DN! and if any help is needed behind the scenes, we're there.

1. Oh please!
I've read that the police are being rather aggressive in MN. I hope someone has good tape. I just don't see Amy Goodman, a highly respected journalist, rioting. No way!

In order to talk to a cop.

59. Which is just showboating
Anyone who works as a reporter knows cops WILL NOT say fuck all in that situation. She didn't need to jump the fence, that was show boating. The only good that came of it is she was able to speak to the people who were arrested.

and was interviewing detainees.

Doing real and courageous journalism is hardly showboating.

Amy is one of the few true journalists working today.

72. "Showboating"? Amy is a COMPULSIVE "showboater"!
Here's an earlier example of it:

>
>
AMY GOODMAN: They beat me and dragged me over and started slamming me with rifle butts and kicks and punches, and then Allan jumped on top of me, and they beat him very badly. But that was the least of what they did. They opened fire on the people, and these were truly defenseless—

129. Amy Goodman doesn't "showboat"
Amy Goodman does not "showboat". She has the courage of a lion and fearlessly speaks truth to power on a daily basis. She has been doing so for some time. She does not "show boat".

Her show, Democracy Now!, delivers day in and day out alternative narrative that counters the propaganda that spews forth daily from our major media. She is like a lighthouse on a stormy night that brings us home with a steady strobe of truth, landing us on solid ground of genuine political reality instead of the imaginary, ersatz world where through steady propaganda we are rendered spectators at our own disembowelment.

Amy Goodman is a modern hero. She deserves praise and accolades, a Pulitzer and a nobel peace prize. She does not "showboat".

155. Wow, she has her own flavour of kool-aid too!
Look, the first reports I heard is that she had just simply jumped a fence and began talking to cops. That turned out to not be the case.

However, if such a situation had occured I'd of called it showboating because every reporter knows cops don't talk in such a siutation so you'd be hopping a police line and giving them an excuse to arrest you, and ya can't file from a prison cell.

So, a reporter would no that no purpose would be served except for them looking like a "hero" to the public. Hence the showboating term. However, seeing as how that's not what happened... I took it back.

67. Yes he did...
And that is why I am so disappointed that Barack Obama distanced himself because the people Jeremiah Wright offended will not vote for Barack Obama and would not vote for him if angels descended from heaven and wrapped their arms around him. People who don't believe we have oppressed other peoples around the world also don't believe we oppress our own but we do. Only the very wealthy in this country have any real protections and rights under the Constitution. And they have formed their own party. The Republicrat Party. The wealthy Republicans and the wealthy Democrats. To protect themselves by serving only themselves. They are oligarchists.

Impeachment was off the table because the table no longer is the table of the citizens. It is the table of the oligarchists.

A growing number of Republicans who are no longer able to pay their bills are waking up. A growing number of Democrats need to wake up as well. Particularly in San Francisco. They need to retire Madame Speaker and her table.

Her attitude of course is no different from the attitude of the Republicans. How dare someone protest in front of her home. They should be thrown in jail. Along with the homeless.

Bang the pots and pans. And hit the polls in November and vote for Barack Obama. Time to end the oligarchy.

They call it detaining so you can't call a lawyer or tell them to piss off because they don't have a warrant. Then they go get a warrant after the fact when they bother to get the warrant.

The police behavior so far has been nothing less than appalling.

She attracts a LOT of hostility from true scum.

Don't forget, Richard Nixon had his own enemies list all the way back in the 1960's. 70's. Who wouldn't expect George W. Bush's party, if it had the power, to put out the word to get her, keep her from doing her job at their convention.

15. Amy Goodman is one of the most dangerous- to the powers that be
journalists out there. In fact she is the most respected, most determined, most consistant thorn in their side. She has been around for years, and she gains viewers and listeners every year. She just goes on, like an energizer bunny, talking truth to power and interviewing those in the know. No grandstanding, just getting the truth out there.

The police may not have realized that Amy Goodman is not to be fucked with.

... to air later? They repeated Democracy Now once again, and there was a cut-in in the middle in addition to the crawl where Dennis Moynihan spoke after they showed the video clip of Amy's arrest, and said that the the two producers were charged with felony crime of rioting, and it sounded like Amy might have been released.

Dennis Moynihan:

"Hi again, Dennis Moynihan of Free Speech TV interrupting Democracy Now with breaking news in St. Paul. Amy Goodman, Sharif Abdul Koudouf, Nicole Salazar, were arrested about 2 1/2 hours ago here in St. Paul by riot police and they've been taken to the Ramsey County Jail. About 40 other people were arrested. We know that many people are moving to 425 Grove Street. I'd like to give you the phone number of the Ramsey County Jail and mayor Chris Coleman's scheduler, whose name is Chris Ryder. The numbers are on your screen. I'm going to give you these numbers. I'm only going to be here for a minute, so the numbers will be available to you after this minute. But if you could make these calls. The Ramsey County Jail is 651-266-9350. Again, 651-266-9350. And then to reach the scheduler for Mayor Chris Coleman, dial 651-266-8535. 651-266-8535.

Sharif Abdul Koudouf and Nicole Salazar were arrested on suspicion of rioting, These are potential felony charges. We have unconfirmed word that Amy Goodman's been released, but we need you to make those calls. PLEASE, make the calls!"

I'd prefer to storm the station. Every one of those police officers should be jailed and tried at the Hague, and the dumbfuck who in charge striped of their citizenship and booted out of the country. But then I think ALL cops, soldiers, bomber pilots and corporate minions should be held directly, criminally and financially accountable for any result of any of their actions.

35. Probable cause to riot?!?!?!? Amy Goodman?!?!?!
No,
More than likely, probable cause to use first amendment rights of assembly, speech, and freedom of the press.
Perhaps these officers don't understand the constitution that they "protect."

Someone, nay, many people will have hell to pay after this is over. Not in the least from Ms. Goodman.

calls can be directed to: Chris Rider from Mayor Coleman's office at

78. Amy Goodman and Two Democracy Now Producers Unlawfully Arrested At the RNC
Source: DemocracyNow!

ST. PAUL, MN—Democracy Now! host Amy Goodman was unlawfully arrested in downtown St. Paul, Minnesota at approximately 5 p.m. local time. Police violently manhandled Goodman, yanking her arm, as they arrested her. Video of her arrest can be seen here: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=oYjyvkR0bGQ

Goodman was arrested while attempting to free two Democracy Now! producers who were being unlawfuly detained. They are Sharif Abdel Kouddous and Nicole Salazar. Kouddous and Salazar were arrested while they carried out their journalistic duties in covering street demonstrations at the Republican National Convention. Goodman’s crime appears to have been defending her colleagues and the freedom of the press.

Ramsey County Sherrif Bob Fletcher told Democracy Now! that Kouddous and Salazar were being arrested on suspicion of rioting. They are currently being held at the Ramsey County jail in St. Paul.

Democracy Now! is calling on all journalists and concerned citizens to call the office of Mayor Chris Coleman and the Ramsey County Jail and demand the immediate release of Goodman, Kouddous and Salazar. These calls can be directed to: Chris Rider from Mayor Coleman’s office at 651-266-8535 and the Ramsey County Jail at 651-266-9350 (press extension 0).

Federal Security Grant
Contact: Tom Walsh
Tom.walsh@ci.stpaul.mn.us

SAINT PAUL, MINN. – The City of Saint Paul has officially received a $50 million grant from the U.S. Department of Justice to help cover security costs associated with hosting the Republican National Convention this September. The grant, which requires formal approval from the Saint Paul City Council, will pay for law enforcement overtime pay, training, equipment, and other essentials related to convention security. The City Council will review the grant and take final action to receive the grant funds at its August 6 meeting.

“Local taxpayers will not be responsible for any of the security costs of the Republican National Convention coming to town,” said Saint Paul Mayor Chris Coleman. “The grant represents federal dollars coming back to Minnesota. As Minnesotans, we will reap the long-term benefits of a major investment in public safety readiness and infrastructure not only for the convention, but for well into the future.”

“The $50 million grant represents one more very big step in making sure we are ready for the convention,” said Saint Paul Police Chief John Harrington. “Minnesota has a strong public safety community and partnerships that work well in all types of situations. This grant ensures that these partnerships are backed by the resources to support and prepare officers for the convention.”

The grant will cover all the added security costs associated with Saint Paul hosting the convention. The most significant expense category – estimated at $34 million – is payment of overtime salary-related personnel costs for more than 3,500 law enforcement officials from the various partnering jurisdictions.

The approximately $16 million remaining will be used to:

• train officers for working in large crowds and for specific situations that could occur during events of this size and nature
• purchase equipment such as motorcycles, bicycles, and radios
• purchase supplies such as fuel, helmets, first aid kits, firefighter/emergency management supplies
• cover travel expenses related to training and planning
• enter into contracts to fulfill needs such as lighting, satellite and cellular phones, etc.

The grant guidelines are very specific in how funds can and cannot be used. Chief Harrington said that the department has made sure all of its uses fit these guidelines. The allocation of grant funds may change slightly, but the categories will remain the same.

The grant application was submitted earlier this year. To secure the grant, the City of Saint Paul and the Saint Paul Police Department worked closely with Minnesota’s Congressional delegation.

They're just as complicit. Otherwise we would have had impeachment and scads of indictments by now. The militarization of our police forces has been going on since Clinton. It's time to stop playing into their hands and be a little more creative than becoming unseen victims. Protests are so 60's. Civility to attempt influence is passe and ineffectual. The internet has opened plenty of other doors.

99. Fascism should anger all who care and love the Constitution.
It is obvious that there are too many people who do not love and support the constitution. For them, the Constitution is there to protect their interests as well. The Constitution is the Social Contract between the Government and the People. Arresting People without probable cause is illegal. Conspiracy to Commit Riot? What a laugh. Reporters do not generally do more than record events, and ask questions. Geez! I hope that people in the Democratic Party with greater power than most of us do something about these injustices. This is Fascism. This is not what America is about. Impeach Bush and Cheney. Impeach all Fascist. End Tyranny. Restore the Republic.

102. I think the cops are about to learn a lesson
that gay folks learned a long time ago attending drag shows in the south. No matter how bad the show, you never heckle the one with the microphone. The one with the microphone can drown you out and make a fool out of you each and every time.

Amy is one smart cookie and has a huge following. The cops in this case are about to find out they're the idiots in the crowd.

I made another donation to DN!, even though this is a really, really thin month. Somehow, the money will come and I'll survive. Freedom is just too important. Just a suggestion, whilst you're there on their site.

106. Unbelievable.
They're arresting and charging journalists with rioting? Not cool. Certainly not legal.

Not very smart, either.

111. Now imagine that happening in Venezuela...
...Cuba, Russia or China. I can just see the huffing and puffing: "Putin arresting Journalists" "Castro suppressing the Media" (and it would be true).
When it's happening in the West, then it was justified or even "she deserved it" (an all-time favorite). Right wing hypocrisy at its best.

136. Venezuela? You're using Venezuela as an example of repression?
Please, get educated!

Try:

www.venezuelanalysis.com (very informative)
and www.BoRev.net (hilarious and informative)

Just one example:

In the U.S., all our votes are now 'counted' by rightwing Bushwhack corpos, using electronic voting machines run on 'TRADE SECRET,' PROPRIETARY programming code--code so secret that not even our secretaries of state are permitted to review it--with virtually no audit/recount controls.

In Venezuela, they use electronic voting, but it is an OPEN SOURCE code system--anyone may review the code by which the votes are tabulated--and they hand-count a whopping 55% of the votes, as a check on machine fraud.

Know how much we hand-count? In about half the voting systems in the U.S., no hand-count is even possible--no audit, no recount--because there is no paper trail to count. In the rest of the country, only 1% is counted (miserably inadequate in a 'TRADE SECRET' code system).

Venezuela's elections put our own to shame for their transparency. Transparent vote counting is the bottom line of democracy. Without it, you don't really have a democracy--which is how and why the U.S. is fast becoming a nazi police state.

Please understand that our Corpo 'news' HATES Venezuela BECAUSE it is a democracy--a real one, unlike the fake democracy they push off on us, in all the Corpo media. And they relentlessly slander Venezuela, and its TRANSPARENTLY ELECTED president, and, indeed, they slander and revile the entire, peaceful, democratic, leftist revolution that has swept South America, because they hate and fear democracy so much. Don't believe them! Resist! Find out for yourself.

"When it's happening in the West...". Venezuela is "the West." Venezuela is American. And Venezuela takes democracy seriously--unlike the fuckwad Corpos that run things here. Lula da Silva, president of Brazil, recently said, of Venezuela's president: "You can criticize Chavez on a lot of things, but not on democracy." Why would he say that? Because he knows the truth, and doesn't buy the bullcrap propaganda of the Bushites and their lapdog press.

"Chavez is a dictator" = "Iraq has WMDs." It's call THE BIG LIE. They repeat it over and over and over, and never mention the evidence to the contrary, even when the evidence to the contrary is overwhelming, as is the case with Chavez. He is a thorough-going democrat with a small d. None of the Corpo allegations against him are true--none!

But don't take my word for it. Find out for yourself. And I would urge you, in particular, to research the RCTV situation, and why the Chavez government decided not to renew its license to use the public airwaves, and related issues, such as how many other governments have pulled broadcast licenses for far less cause, over the last decade. You should also look into Venezuela's political culture, and whether or not (I really have to laugh at this) free speech is repressed in Venezuela. The exact opposite is true--but I think you can and will find that out for yourself.

115. I'm Pissed as Well
My first post on this forum, but when I saw the title of this thread I couldn't help but reply. I was just watching Amy Goodman's report this morning on this very subject, and was shocked to see by this evening she herself has been "detained". I too think this is bullshit. Unlike many so-called "journalists" she's really willing to get out there and fight for the story. Hopefully only good can come from this present situation. Give em hell, Goodman!

130. Outrageous!
Is this the tipping point that Naomi Wolf writes about? When a major journalist is arrested and detained, convicted, and jailed -- that will be the tipping point, the moment when we realize we no longer live in an open society. Outrageous treatment of a well known journalist will chill the free flow of information from other journalists. People will grow increasingly careful about what they say and write. There will be a further narrowing of the agenda about what is permissible to speak. I hear those jack-boots of fascism on the side-walks of our cities. We are a fascist country beginning to close down.

AP photographer, Democracy Now! host arrested
By SCOTT BAUER Associated Press Writer
The Associated Press - Tuesday, September 02, 2008

MINNEAPOLIS

Associated Press photographer Matt Rourke and Democracy Now! TV and radio show host Amy Goodman were among those arrested Monday at an anti-war march coinciding with the first day of the Republican National Convention.

Rourke was swept up as police moved in on a group of protesters in downtown St. Paul, the scene of scattered violence and vandalism by protesters, some of whom described themselves as anarchists.

<snip>

David Ake, an AP assistant chief of bureau in Washington, said he was concerned by the arrest of Rourke, a Philadelphia-based photographer.

"Covering news is a constitutionally protected activity, and covering a riot is part of that coverage," Ake said. "Photographers should not be detained for covering breaking news."

146. Are they worried enough to send more reporters there?
Are they worried enough to cut into other news and cover this? Are they worried enough about their Constitutional rights to actually get out from behind the news desks and find out what the hell's really going on and why it seems to be a police state in St. Paul right now?
