Convention a hit for Denver?
Virtually everyone says DNC was a huge success

Peter Marcus, DDN Staff Writer
Tuesday, September 2, 2008

Just over a year ago, Denver had egg on its face.

But Denver pulled it off. Delegates were ecstatic. Visitors were pleased. And even protesters were satisfied — at least the 152 who were not arrested.

Hickenlooper speechless?

Mayor John Hickenlooper — a man who never usually has to search for words — found himself a bit speechless following the week’s worth of activities.
“It’s hard to put into words how proud I am of our city … of our residents, our city employees, our thousands of volunteers, and of course, our local business community,” he told the Denver Daily News in a prepared statement. “We’ve received a tremendous amount of positive feedback on how safe, clean and accessible Denver is and how friendly our people are,” continued the mayor. “Visitors commented on everything from how vibrant Denver is to our world-class arts and culture scene and our greening efforts. Many told us they’d love to come back for a vacation, to open a business here, or to host their organization’s next conference here.”

Happy visitors

The Denver Daily News found similar comments from visitors interviewed throughout the week.
“Denver is getting a great reputation. It’s been excellent, just wonderful,” said Mike Taylor, who traveled from Chapel Hill, N.C., to participate in the convention. “The people have been just incredibly friendly; it’s a beautiful, beautiful city and very user-friendly.”
“Everybody’s done everything they possibly could to make us feel welcome,” continued Taylor.

Protesters … well … satisfied overall

Re-create 68 lead organizer Glenn Spagnuolo, who negotiated for the release of approximately 100 protesters following a riot Monday night in Civic Center, said he was “satisfied” with the week.
“There were some really good things and some really bad things,” he said. “There were a lot of victories we were happy about … the police changed some of their tactical behavior, which changed the tenor for the week. But overall, I’m satisfied.”

5. I was unhappy with Monday night's arrests, but the Rethugs have greatly overshadowed that.
And I was not happy with the "Freedom Cage" area, but other than that, I think it was a great success, overall. I had a ball.

2. That is very good news...
I am impressed that the Re-create 68 organizer was overall satisfied. Especially in light of what is going on in Minnesota.

3. Pretty Perfect
the Pepsi Ctr looked awesome, the weather was awesome, and the acceptance speech day was spectacular. Some were worried we couldn't pull it off.

8. Our weather is always awesome...
We get lots of sun. Because of the low humidity...there is less haze (except for the day Obama gave his speech)...so you can see farther and our skies appear bluer. And sunshine makes you happy happy happy

I know it sounds silly...but spend some time here and you'll know what I mean.

Also...we're rather mild. I've played golf in January here for many occasions...and my Grandfather did all the time as well. I tell people, "We're as mild as you can get and still have all four seasons."

9. having visited Denver not long ago for my first long stay
I was hugely impressed with the city.
Great transit, vibrant downtown, one of the best
contemporary art museums in the country,
incredible restaurants.
The mountains in the distance, and the sunny
climate give one a natural sense of optimism.

10. I am NOT satisfied with Denver Model - shock and awe
It is not OK to allow police becoming undistinguishable with military. We do have Posse Comitatus Act, don't we? MSM seems to be downplaying this development in this country. People are complacent. Facism develops slowly and with many small steps like this.

"The clear intention was to show all weapons and forces in overwhelming numbers, sending the message to protester and populace that if anybody gets out of line, they will be crushed. De-escalating forces to match the number of protesters would have short-circuited this plan of shock and awe. All forces and weapons would be shown from beginning to end, no matter the number of protesters. Shock and awe is the first pillar of the new Denver model." Of course, Denver is a great city. Our mountain is beautiful. I am glad you all enjoyed the Front Range. Come back again!

12. Anyone from the press have the decency to eat their words?
After all their pointless yammering about chaos and uproar...
