Absence of Bush and Cheney cheers Republican delegates
Steven Thomma | McClatchy Newspapers

ST. PAUL, Minn. — Although they were reluctant to say it out loud, many Republicans were relieved Monday that President Bush didn't attend the Republican National Convention.

They didn't like to talk about it on the record, in part because they didn't want to admit an unintended political benefit in Hurricane Gustav, which led both Bush and Vice President Dick Cheney to cancel their scheduled speeches Monday to the convention.

They also didn't want to admit publicly that a president from their own party is a drag on their prospects.

Yet inside and outside the convention hall, they mostly agreed that Bush is a political problem for Republican presidential candidate John McCain, and that it was better that TV screens Monday evening didn't feature delegates cheering him on.

After a unsatisfactory night of hookers & blow delegates can still say, "At least Bush & Cheney aren't here."

I'm still flabbergasted at what has happened.

16. That's right, Georgie. This is your last chance to bask in
being the president, the head of your party. Don't let those old meanies yank the spotlight away from you. You deserve this!

9. Compare and contrast:
It would be hard to say who got a stronger reception at the democratic convention: Bill Clinton, Al Gore, Hillary Clinton, or Barack Obama.

It remains to be seen what kind of reception Palin and McCain will get.

12. Update: Bush changed his mind
Bush to Speak to Republican Convention

ABC’s George Stephanopoulos reports: After skipping the opening day of the Republican National Convention to personally check the emergency response to Hurricane Gustav, President George W. Bush will keep his appointment with the party faithful.

Bush will speak to the RNC Tuesday in St. Paul, one day after the convention opened to an abbreviated schedule due to the storm.

Hurricane Gustav hit the Gulf Coast almost three years to the day after Hurricane Katrina devastated the area, and left deep political wounds on Bush and his administration.

Eager to demonstrate the lessons learned from the Katrina criticism, Bush visited evacuee centers in Texas today. And Republican candidate John McCain spent the day at a disaster relief agency in Ohio and packed boxes of cleaning supplies to be sent to the relief effort.

Good. I hope he goes there and doesn't just do it by satellite or by videotape. I want him there with all his pomp and BS.

20. I would rather he do it remotely
I have friends downtown St Paul and any of the normal chaos caused by the Secret Service moving presidents around is the last thing downtown St Paul or the roads from MSP to Xcel Energy Center need.

19. Maybe he's too busy...
...with this?

From the Telegraph:
Dutch withdraw spy from Iran because of 'impending US attack'
The Dutch intelligence service has pulled an agent out of an "ultra-secret operation" spying on Iran's military industry because spymasters in Netherlands believe a United States air attack was imminent.
