Study: Sharp drop in black GOP delegates
Source: USA Today

ST. PAUL — There are 36 black delegates at the Republican convention here — fewer than 2% of the total and a sharp drop-off from 2004, a think tank reports.

The GOP record was set with 6.7% black delegates in 2004.

The Democratic Party, which has targets for minority representation, said a record 24.5% of delegates at its convention last week were black. That's about twice the percentage of blacks in the U.S. population, according to the Census Bureau.

Joanna Burgos, a spokeswoman for the GOP convention, said 13% of delegates this year are minorities. She said that's double the total in 1996, and "we look forward to continuing and expanding these relationships."

1. Don't worry about it
The Fox News TV pool will have the cameras on those 36 delegates so much you won't even notice how few of them there are.

8. Good news on this front...
African Americans who support Republicans are like chickens supporting Colonel Sanders. How 36 of us can support Republicans at their convention this year still defies belief.

12. the sun is finally setting...
on the 90s heyday of black conservatism, which formed out of anti-clinton sentiment, resentment against the established '60s civil rights old guard, democratic strongholds that took the black vote for granted, and some who just wanted to go against the grain...the black conservative movement was already on a downward slope until two lifesaving bumps came in 2000 (the bush pandering to homophobic black churches and the increased use of "faith based initiatives") and 2002 (Cosby strikes)....

and slowly but surely, what was once a cool and antagonizing way to rebel against your parents and social structure by joining the GOP, people began to jump off the bandwagon as it became clearer that the GOP really didn't care about them, and the lofty ideas floated by Rush and Thomas Sowell just weren't going to happen...Clarence Thomas, once thought to be the flag carrier for black conservatives, has proven to only care about himself and his legacy...J.C. Watts, Alan Keyes, Michael Steele were once nightly fixtures on the news and now they have all but disappeared...Condi and Colin have been proven to be worthless puppets of the regime...Hell, even the "I'll-join-the-GOP-just-to-prove-my-'outspoken'-credentials" Charles Barkley jumped ship some time ago...Even a blind man could see the racism in the new post 9/11 gop policies, from racial profiling to the patriot act to the Katrina response to the coded talk in every republican speech to the overt racism (i.e. blacks are poor, lazy, disinterested, criminals, promiscuous, ignorant, need to be saved from themselves, the list goes on) from almost any RW columnist in the local rag...

18. same here -
Behind closed doors, there will always be not-so-flattering terms...Sometimes a chuckle escapes me when we're talking about Keyes or Thomas, and one of my cousins chimes in...

I'm sure similar to stuff Jesse would say when he thinks the mic is off...

16. Someone needs to do a study on why there are ANY black republicans.
It's hard for me to fathom why anyone but rich, greedy, amoral, old white guys would be Republican.
