Palin Slashed Funding for Teen Moms
Source: Washington Post

ST. PAUL -- Alaska Gov. Sarah Palin, the Republican vice-presidential nominee who revealed Monday that her 17-year-old daughter is pregnant, earlier this year used her line-item veto to slash funding for a state program benefiting teen mothers in need of a place to live.

After the legislature passed a spending bill in April, Palin went through the measure reducing and eliminating funds for programs she opposed. Inking her initials on the legislation -- "SP" -- Palin reduced funding for Covenant House Alaska by more than 20 percent, cutting funds from $5 million to $3.9 million. Covenant House is a mix of programs and shelters for troubled youths, including Passage House, which is a transitional home for teenage mothers.

According to Passage House's web site, its purpose is to provide "young mothers a place to live with their babies for up to eighteen months while they gain the necessary skills and resources to change their lives" and help teen moms "become productive, successful, independent adults who create and provide a stable environment for themselves and their families."

-----

Earlier today the Associated Press reported that Sen. John McCain (Ariz.), the presumptive Republican presidential nominee, opposed funding to prevent teen pregnancies, a position that Palin also took as governor. "The explicit sex-ed programs will not find my support," she wrote in a 2006 questionnaire distributed among gubernatorial candidates.

54. Palan's Agenda
I agree. I have a saying that the way the Religious Right will win over our Government is that people will be starved, poor and be weakened, so that they will then be automatically in the "kneeling" position. The word Reformer that is used to describe her is to me a code word for the Religious extremist version of the word Reformer. She and the whole group make me shudder and I do not mean this lightly.

28. "john TRIGG" is on the list. isn't that her kid's name?
the john trigg ester library in alaska
http://www.esterlibrary.org/

"The family of John Trigg has been a major donor both in books and funds. Much of the library's collection of science, science fiction, fantasy, and mystery titles were originally from Trigg's private library or donated by his family. The library has approximately 5,000 volumes in its collections, and is constructing a new library building."

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/John_Trigg_Ester_Library

did she name that baby after a library?

"The John Trigg Ester Library was named after John Trigg in part due to his love of books, and in part because of his creation of a book exchange in the Golden Eagle Saloon next door. The library itself was once (in 1999) the "Ester Republic Reading Room".
http://fairbanks-alaska.com/ester-alaska.htm

"In August 1999 a small membership library opened its doors, the John Trigg Ester Library, named after a local resident who had started a book exchange in a nearby bar.

90. You should have heard the Repukes on a talk show in Lima, Ohio Tuesday.
They think she's just what the country needs. They think she could step right into the office of the president if McCain became incapacitated because she was the mayor of a town (smaller than most county seats in Ohio) and the governor of a state (population less than most major cities).

And these people really think she's ready to run the most powerful nation on the planet?

If I may borrow a question from a recent political ad campaign: what kind of phone call has she ever received at 3:00 a.m.? Probably from somebody bitching that there's a friggin' moose snooping around their garbage cans!

Does anybody really think these same people would have defended a Democratic candidate on the ticket with this resume?

They just want the agenda served that have been served for the past 8 years...fascism, corporatism, social darwinism, dominionism, and "screw everyone else, I have mine."

The sad part is how many of these people do not even realize that they are on the losing end of all of these policies.

...oh, wait a minute: he's against stem cell research even though his own wife has MS and might well benefit from same.

It appears that the current generation of repukes has forgotten the one exception to being reflexively opposed to any and all social services: it used to be that you were allowed to be for it if it benefited you or your family directly.

Now however, it's just "I've got mine, screw you." :puke:

Since this woman is already a fountain of embarrassment and it's only been one working day since her nomination, I wonder what they're going to dig up when there's two working days to look. I have a feeling the flood gates are going to burst.

There hasn't even been time for people she's dissed to step forward yet but we already have names of who can get in line. She's got the complete presses attention. Not just little tiny articles.

This woman isn't going to make it to Friday.

51. Typical hypocrisy from the rightwing
I abhor the focus on anyone's personal life and especially on the children of politicians, but this family is a typical example of their hypocrisy. They are in a position to help their daughter deal with this, but clearly this woman has no empathy at all for other teenagers or young women who do not have the resources she has.

Alaska is about the wealthiest State right now. It can plainly afford to help.

But really, I believe her family should be off-limits. Her support of her daughter says nothing about what she thinks the government should do.

I think she's a reprehensible person anyway.

73. Palin Eloped - First Son Born 8 MONTHS later: Hypocrite?
Edited on Tue Sep-02-08 11:23 PM by bobbiwilson201
Did history repeat itself?

From Wikipedia: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Sarah_Palin

Family

Sarah Palin eloped with her high-school boyfriend, Todd Palin, on August 29, 1988, when she was 24 years old.<6> According to her mother, "It was a shock but she did it because she knew we couldn’t afford a big white wedding."<124> Their first son, Track, was born eight months after their wedding

Ya'll join in. That woman is surprisingly unpopular. I think she looks like a lot of people's most despised college teacher or maybe the hardass at the court house who will not stay open the extra ten minutes necessary for you to get your passport so you can take that vacation you have been planning for months.

They went for a hard brunette with glasses thinking she would look smarter, but that type has been stereotyped as M-E-A-N on too many TV shows. Will be interesting to see if people warm to her in the lower 48. There is reason so many politicians go blonde.

80. I am starting to think there might be a divine donkey somewhere.
:dem:

A well qualified VP should have: a higher than average knowledge of American foreign policies, and most important is that a VP understands the broad domestic needs of ALL states in the United States, and having had success in actively legislating policies.

What a VP should NOT have: is a very questionable political background that can be easily tied to Tubes Ted who is currently charged with violating provisions of the Ethics in Government Act. Also, they really should not have strenuous personal issues pending while trying to obtain a job and attend to the duty of serving in our nations highest executive office. It doesn't matter if man or woman.

No way, no how, no McPalin.

83. Yes.I know some people want it worded anti-choice at all times and I do most of the time but only
because I think they are anti-choice.

When I use pro life and I will continue to do so from time to time, it's because I always (no exceptions) use the term pro life with great contempt...and while people reading it can't hear my contempt, that still won't change how I type it out at those times.

Edited on Wed Sep-03-08 03:42 PM by Solly Mack
You don't like my use of sarcasm - which does indeed include using the term pro-life in a sarcastic contemptuous fashion from time to time...I don't care.

You are correct about Democratic POLITICIANS insisting on working within frameworks that republicans have established on the issues and pro-life is one of those republican framed debates (so are religion, family values ,patriotism, strong on national security, etc. )

But you're more than a little off-base on claiming that the contemptuous and sarcastic use of a term republicans label themselves by is - one of the reasons we lose elections.

Blame the candidates - they are the ones allowing the republicans to set the tone instead of challenging them on it. I guess it's just easier and safer to blame everyone else for a candidates inability to challenge republican framing though.

Now, if I thought in terms of pro-life, in other words, if I thought in terms of right wing framing, you might have a point in attempting to ah..school me....but as I don't and never have...you're just pissing on the choir, so to speak.

Edited on Wed Sep-03-08 05:15 PM by BessieRoss
Not accurate account on this one unfortunately. They asked for 5 she gave them 3.9. They had a net gain in provision. She took nothing away nor slashed anything. She gave she just didn't give the "suggested proposed amount. It could easily be debated you ask for a 10% raise but only got 7%. No one slashed you. You got a raise it just wasn't the amount you had hoped for. Think it through guys lets not shoot ourselves with this stuff.

In fact if the story is brought up it shows and increase of monetary provision from 2006 to present for a place called Covenant House.

Guys if we dig the dirt up lets make sure we do this correctly so that it isn't a fantasy and we have all the truth out there. Not just a hope it will run without an avenue or loophole for them to jump through.

Whats next? Make it something good not stuff like that has an open door to walk right through.

The legislature passed a spending bill and "Palin went through the measure reducing and eliminating funds for programs she opposed." In my book, that's called "slashing."

Regardless, the whole point, in my view, is her hypocrisy on the issue of teen mothers, especially teen mother's whose own mother is not the governor.

123. Abstinence Only education is ridiculous
Virgins don't need education in abstinence, they have vastly more experience with abstinence than Sarah Palin has experience in being an elected official. Education only in how NOT to have sex benefits no one. Teaching abstinence as part of a complete sexual education isn't a problem, but parents that advocate Abstinence Only are commonly known as Grandparents.

Abstinence Only makes as much sense as teaching a blind person how to put on a blindfold. What teens need is information what it means to be safely navigate in a sexually active environment. They ARE going to be sexually active, regardless of what the fundy conservatives would like to think, and as Sarah herself has now found out.
