ST. PAUL, Minn. -- Students from Harding High School and Johnson High School in St. Paul are planning a walkout to protest war and the Republican National Convention.

Police have one message: stay in school

St. Paul Police Chief John Harrington told reporters Thursday that police are in contact with school administrators to discourage a walkout on the fourth and final day of the RNC. He hopes student who wish to protest will wait until after school.

Parents received a recorded message Wednesday night from the Harding High School principal saying students who leave school in a walkout will be punished.

Thursday scheduled protests

A march organized by Youth Against War and Racism is scheduled for noon Thursday at the Minnesota State Capitol, with a rally a mock trial before marching to Harriet Island.

Another protest is scheduled for 4 p.m. in St. Paul

2. Fascsit thugs say "Stay in school, continue brain washing."
Deny students their First Amendment Rights.

Constitutional law no longer an accepted part of school curriculum.

3. Most schools if they still teach Civics
Only make it available during their senior year. The constitution gets brought up during their junior year just because they need to pass a test. Most students don't have a clue about their rights under the constitution. The biggest threat to the right wing Fascist is an educated electorate.

8. "The biggest threat to the right wing Fascist is an educated electorate. "
So correct.

Hence the stupidification of America with the attack on public schools and the moronic idiocy of network television.

10. "Fascist thugs"?
Do you really think that these kids are as interested in protesting the war and the convention as they are in getting out of school?

19. Nice diminution of American youth's commitment to progressive change.
Edited on Thu Sep-04-08 02:33 PM by Bob Dobbs
They are going to have to live with the world the next president fashions.

Who are you to question the commitment of these potential cannon fodder youths to ending a hopeless and self destructive war?

Perhaps they don't want to live the rest of their lives indebted to China and suffering from PTSD and concussive brain injury as a result of conscription into an impossible imperialist war for oil.

I welcome these young people's contribution to The People's war against the power elite.

And yes, the homeland security proxies, aka the St. Paul and surrounding municipalities' police forces, are the definition of "fascist thugs".

i have fond memories of our entire class walking out of high school, and out of college, at egregious offenses of the Nixon administration.

6. They'll be "punished"?
For what? Having an opinion? Geez. You'd think schools would encourage freedom of expression and choice, not "punish" it.

7. They can't do shit about it if
the parents of children who want to protest would call in and excuse them. I would stand with my child and be right outside that school to march with her!

9. Lets just hope the police don't go over the top
I can remember May 4th 1970 as though it were yesterday. That was the National Guard but the police are even better equipped now than the Nat.Guard were in those days.

13. An antiwar protest at a high school in the Chicago suburbs last year
merited a police line and two dozen students expelled. It was reported on with one paragraph in the city newspaper, buried deep inside, two weeks later.

17. Good for the students!!
The St. Paul police are trying to assert a fascist/police state and I hope
students carry out their walkout to defy this incredible attack on the 1st Amendment.

In case the St. Paul police chief, who probably never has read the Constitution,
and probably has an IQ of 60, you can send him this link to the 1st Amendment in
case he is able to read the English language:

http://www.usconstitution.net/const.html#Am1

Go students of St. Paul!

18. In my town, in the 2006 elections, kids put the Dem over the top.
For State Senate, the repuke was leading until the results from our college town came in. Overwhelmingly Dem. So there is hope.
