Rice travels to LIbya to meet with Qaddafi

TRIPOLI, Libya: For the first time in more than half a century, a high U.S. official traveled to Libya on Friday to meet with the man whom Ronald Reagan famously called the "Mad Dog of the Middle East."

But that was then. Secretary of State Condoleezza Rice traveled to Tripoli to meet a very different Colonel Muammar el-Qaddafi, saying that the visit proved that the United States never writes off another nation forever.

"There is a long way to go but I do be-lieve that this demonstrates that the United States doesn't have permanent enemies," Rice said as she flew to the capital.

She said she had not expected ever to make such a trip.
