Hanna rakes Carolinas; Hurricane Ike (now Cat 4 again) looms
Source: MSNBC

updated 10 minutes ago

RALEIGH, N.C. - Tropical Storm Hanna accelerated toward New England on Saturday after the storm's whipping winds and rain didn't linger long enough over the Southeast to cause much more than some isolated flooding and power outages.

Hanna moved quickly inland after cruising ashore overnight with winds of around 50 mph. But as the storm cleared out of the Southeast, eyes turned to the open Atlantic and to the nasty looking Hurricane Ike, which intensified to a dangerous Category 4 storm, with winds up to 135 mph. Cuba was warned

This was the only link I could find after the 5:00pm advisory. It looks like it's headed for Northern Cuba and the Florida Straits and then the gulf.

Time to batten down the hatches. My dad got nailed just outside of Myrtle Beach, SC early this morning by Hanna. And we're under the gun down here in a couple of days.

If I believed in a god, I'd say the deity is trying to put the poor people of Haiti out of their misery. This will be 4 times in 3 weeks! Just a side blow, but they don't need another drop of rain.

1. I'm really not liking Ike's track up our coast.
But that's nothing compared to Haiti if this one hits them first.

3. I saw one track that has Ike just brushing you guys
and then heading for the Louisiana coastline. Oy. Judging from what Sacred Cow said, LA is still pretty fucked up from Gustav...

5. The wild card is that trough dropping through the midwest.
If it gets into the gulf at the wrong time, similar to what happened with Charlie a few years ago, it could push it right into the Tampa Bay area.

A hurricane moving into Tampa Bay is considered the second worst case scenario after New Orleans.

6. I hope it's just your lake that's flooded.
A lot of yards on Florida's East Coast, and Orlando STILL look like that from FAY.

12. Storms in Orlando--and along the Eastern Seaboard
When I was visiting my family over the Labor Day weekend, my sister told me that Fay hanging around gave the area a good soaking. I'm glad Hanna just charged up the coast. And that I didn't have to go anywhere today.

James Dobson had better pray for better weather. If he hadn't prayed for rain at the end of the Democratic Convention, maybe we wouldn't have had this spate of hurricanes and tropical storms. But I doubt he cares if hundreds of people die in Haiti, Dominican Republic, Cuba, or New Orleans.

8. Wow! Which lake? We had power out at our house in Chapel Hill for 3 hours
but we're on a hill--no flooding. Three trees uprooted down the street, too.
