Lawmakers: Change Terror Alert System

WASHINGTON -- Congress urged the Bush administration Wednesday to improve the nation's terror alert system, saying that the "one-size-fits-all" approach isn't working.

Americans are confused about what to do when the alert level is raised, and local communities are spending scarce cash even when they're not the target, lawmakers complained at a hearing by the House Homeland Security Committee.

Deputy Homeland Security Secretary James Loy defended the color-coded system, calling it a work in progress. "We are getting better at it daily," he said.

Rep. Christopher Cox, the committee chairman, told Loy that progress has been made, but that officials should make an effort to target the warnings to specific industries or regions.

2. Where I live

we don't do anything. The only way a terrorist act would affect us would be a nuclear explosion, and I figure if that happens, we can all kiss our friends goodbye.

But it is ludicrous to have rural Arkansas, with more deer and elk than people, under the same terror alert level as New York City.
