After previously opposing any kind of extension, the president on Wednesday said the Sept. 11 commission should get the two extra months it says it needs to finish its work.
It marked the second time this week the president has reversed course on an investigation. On Monday, he agreed to form a separate, independent panel on intelligence leading up to the war in Iraq (news - web sites).
Formally known as the National Commission on Terrorist Attacks Upon the United States, the Sept. 11 panel is scheduled to release on May 27 a report assessing the Bush administration's handling of pre-attack intelligence. But last week it asked that the deadline be extended to July 26, citing a need to conduct more interviews and analyze documents.
