Slaughterhouse charged with using child labor

DES MOINES, Iowa (AP) -- The Iowa attorney general's office filed child labor charges Tuesday against the owner and managers of the Agriprocessors kosher meatpacking plant, the site of one of the nation's largest workplace immigration raids.

The complaint alleges more than 9,000 violations of Iowa's child labor law at the plant in Postville, saying the violations involved 32 children under age 18, including seven who were younger than 16.

An affidavit said children were exposed to dry ice and chlorine solutions and were operating conveyor belts, meat grinders, circular saws, power washers and power shears.

The attorney general's office said the violations occurred from September 9, 2007, to May 12, 2008, when the plant was raided by federal immigration agents.

Just as it's the bosses who are to blame for hiring people without working papers for lower wages than they would otherwise pay, they are certainly to blame for exploiting child labor. Now that children are involved, maybe people will wake the fuck up and see that they should be fighting in solidarity with the workers against the robber barons.

Slaughterhouses have even higher turnover--sometimes 100 percent--than fast food joints. They're notorious for using illegal labor--and the workers are expendable. Who gives a shit if they get hurt; there's someone else to take their places.

And, as you noticed, animal industry bigwigs are often conservative and give to Repugnants. Every dollar you spend on meat goes to a Republican or someone who votes for one.
