McCain must embrace Palin's beliefs, evangelical leader says

(CNN) -- Her faith is one of the reasons many evangelical Christians are excited about Sarah Palin's addition to the Republican presidential ticket, but the Alaska governor's evangelical beliefs have also drawn scrutiny.

Evangelicals are closely watching whether the McCain campaign embraces Palin's religious views or shies away from them, Tony Perkins, president of Family Research Council, told CNN.

Perkins sat down with CNN's John Roberts on Tuesday to discuss how the vice presidential pick's faith could influence the presidential election.

Roberts: For a couple of decades, she was a member of the Pentecostal Assembly of God church. Six years ago, she changed to the Wasilla Bible Church. I read an article in which one of her former pastors suggested may be playing down her faith because there may be some misunderstanding about her Pentecostalism. What do you think about all of this?

1. I don't think McCain is the slightest bit religious
Maybe Perkins better pray to baby Jeebus for McCain to see the light.

Ok, he already pretty much speaks gibberish in public.

9. I can only assume...
that since Bush embraced Cheney's views, and now McPOW is supposed to embrace Palin's views, that is the way the repukes roll these days. Pick somebody who appears to be almost electable to the masses (so they don't freak when you steal the vote), and thrust a right-wing nut case on them to actually set policy.

10. This needs to be repeated over and over and over
in campaign ads.

Generally speaking, most people don't take too kindly to having others' religious beliefs- especially EXTREME AND BIZARRE religious beliefs crammed down their throats.

The campaign needs to realize this and stop pandering to these fundie nutters- and instead, start showing people in no uncertain terms what they're all about.

They're 15% or at most 20% of the electorate, for crying put loud- and they will will never vote Democratic.

14. I agree.
I hope some of Obama's campaign war chest is going to be spent on ads featuring people talking in tongues & being slain in the spirit & all that jazz.

That stuff isn't even vaguely 'mainstream'.

It'll play well. By which I mean to say, it will frighten people. Fear works.

There's PLENTY of creepy, well documented material to use in the candidates (and the direct surrogate's) own words.

Phil Gramm on the economy was a classic example of one of so many opportunities that we've missed as they occurred.

11. Somebody on tv has to corner McSame on whether he agrees about this.
Raise the question over and over. And if that doesn't get an answer, then the fact that he agrees by default has to be raised with statements and in ads.

The values thing will have to be addressed, because to let it go hands the Repubs the election.

pandering to Palin. Don't they realize, if she gets elected, that they are next? Slowly but surely, the talibornagains will be replacing and positioning themselves deeper and deeper into key positions in the mainstream media. Are they so insulated that they can't see the danger to themselves, much less the country?

Edited on Wed Sep-10-08 05:02 AM by Waiting For Everyman
She's no Christian, because there's that pesky 9th Commandment... about lying, "bearing false witness against your neighbor". Can't lie all day long and be a Christian. Sorry.

I guess the "evangelical leader" forgot that. If McCain's tactics are alright with him, then the so-called leader is a proven FRAUD. So is Palin.

35. I get confused on this stuff all the time --
I never can figure out what's the difference between "evangelical" and "pentecostal." When I was a little kid I thought they meant the same thing - and in those days, their women wore no cosmetics, didn't go to the beauty salon, wore frumpy clothes, etc. But now it seems to be all jumbled up.

I don't mean to insult anybody, just curious. I was raised Catholic, and I know we were always told they regarded us as children of the devil.

37. One is a subset of the other -
Evangelicals generally believe that you must consciously accept Jesus as your Lord and Savior and have a personal relationship with Him, the literal truth of the Bible and the need to tell others about the Gospels (a practice called evangelizing, hence their name which comes from the Greek for Good News which is what Gospel means in Greek).

Pentecostals are a subset of Evangelicals because in addition to all that, Pentecostals believe in the Baptism of the Holy Spirit which is outwardly manifest, generally by speaking in tongues, or one or more of the other gifts of the Holy Spirit as set out in I Corinthians which include, IIRC, interpretation of tongues, healing, discernment of spirits, the ability to cast out spirits, prophecy, miracle working, the word of knowledge and the word of wisdom (these last two are actually different - word of knowledge is the ability to tell someone something factual while the word of wisdom is the ability to give someone a spiritual insight on something in their life that they are dealing with). There are of course differences in theology among various groups of Pentecostals, but that pretty much sums up their main beliefs.
