Stampede leaves 37 dead in Beijing
Beijing — At least 37 people were killed and 15 others injured Thursday when a crowd stampeded during a holiday gathering outside the Chinese capital on the final day of the country's Lunar New Year celebrations, the government said.

Officials, including President Hu Jintao, expressed “deep concern” and ordered an investigation. The mayor of Beijing was on at scene supervising.

“This is a very serious incident,” said Wu Kun, a spokesman for the Beijing city government. “There could even be more people dead. It's still a very confusing scene up there.”

3. They deserve

The people of China deserve self-detemination.

I think America should make a monument for the man who stared down the tank in Tieneman square. We should save it as a gift for the day when China (AND TIBET!!!!) is finally free.

4. Chinese and all of Asian people are very nice! Which includes all the
Middle Eastern people I've met in Hong Kong. In fact, the only bad people I know are in the Repukelican Party right here at home.

5. Whatever caused them to start calling this kind of situation a "stampede?"
Edited on Thu Feb-05-04 08:31 PM by JudiLyn
It's simply unacceptable. That's a term, used concerning the animal world, as in cattle, and simply doesn't come across well concerning people. Not one bit.

Until the last few years, time papers, tv networks could handle reporting on these events by using terms like "mass panic," and as a verb, "panicked." Damned easy to accomplish, easy to understand.

"Stampede" is disrespectful, thank you very much. Whew.

On edit:

dArKeR, good post #4. I totally agree.

You nailed that one! :)

When I read the headline, thought, " WHAT stampeded people?" Thought it could be cattle, but just knew it was referring to people.
