Cyanuramide Traces in Milk Powder Kill One Baby in China

Thursday, Chinese authorities announced that due to traces of cyanuramide found in milk formula, one baby died and more than a dozen others developed kidney stones.

The Chinese Ministry of Health stated that the milk powder responsible was a product of the Sanlu Group, one of the country’s leading dairy producers, which is now facing a second major scandal. The first one took place in 2005, when Tianjin authorities reported finding hundreds of cases of mislabeled yoghurt. The Sanlu Group is owned, in part, by Fonterra Co-operative Group Limited, the sixth largest dairy company worldwide, but the most influential when it comes to international dairy trade.

A statement released by the company informed that Sanlu would be taking the necessary steps in order to ensure that its products are safe to consume.

Gansu Province doctors have revealed that the fourteen infants who developed kidney stones, all of which are under eleven months old, had been fed the Sanlu-brand milk formula. They all came from poor families, living in peripheral areas, who had paid much less than usual for the product ...

FDA: Infant formula from China tainted by chemical
By RICARDO ALONSO-ZALDIVAR – 3 hours ago

WASHINGTON (AP) — Tainted infant formula from China may be on sale at ethnic groceries in this country, even though it is not approved for importation, federal officials warned on Thursday ...

FDA officials are urging U.S. consumers to avoid all infant formula from China, after several brands sold in that country came under suspicion of being contaminated with melamine, a chemical used in plastics. Officials said there have been reports from China of babies developing kidney stones as a result. There have been no reports of illnesses in the U.S.

"We're concerned that there may be some infant formula that may have gotten into the United States illegally and may be on the ethnic market," said Janice Oliver, deputy director of the FDA's food safety program. "No infant formula from China should be entering the United States, but in the past we have found it on at least one occasion." ...

2. The top link claimed that this Baby Formula had No Nutritional Value!
Edited on Thu Sep-11-08 09:14 PM by trthnd4jstc
Dear Nation of China,
Please insist on making your companies abide by certain standards. I am certain that you will kill whoever the official is that was in charge of food safety in this case, and you will probably kill one or more factory managers, but that will not make your nation better. As bad as the Republicans in our nation make what regulations we have in this country out to be, infant formula must have some nutritional value.

GENERAL DESCRIPTION

MELAMINE also called Cyanuramide, or Triaminotriazine, a colourless, is a crystalline substance belonging to the family of heterocyclic organic compounds, which are used principally as a starting material for the manufacture of synthetic resins. Melamine is manufactured by heating dicyandiamide under pressure. Its most important reaction is the forming resinous compounds of high molecular weight, with formaldehyde. These resins form under the influence of heat but, once formed, are insoluble and infusible. Usually formulated with fillers and pigments, they are molded into dishes, containers, utensils, handles, and the like or used as laminating agents or coating materials for wood, paper, and textiles. Formica and Melmac are well-known trade names for products based on melamine resins. Butylated melamine resins, made by incorporating butyl alcohol into the melamine-formaldehyde reaction mixture, are fluids used as ingredients of paints and varnishes.
