McCain gets grilled on "The View"; "She sold the airplane at a loss."
Source: CNN

(CNN) – When John McCain agreed to appear on the day-time talk fest known as The View, he may not have been expecting too many hard-hitting questions. But the Arizona senator was aggressively pressed on VP candidate Sarah Palin's qualifications to be vice president, as well as his new negative campaign ads that several independent fact-checks have called downright misleading.

Co-host Barbara Walters immediately asked McCain about a remark he’d made that Palin might just be the most "marvelous running mate" ever, asking, "that's not a little strong?"...

Walters went on to press Palin's reformist credentials, noting McCain has served in Washington for more than two decades and asking repeatedly, "who's she going to reform, you?" McCain began to answer by saying Democrats have held control of Congress for two years, before Walters quickly interrupted: “But tell me who she is going to reform — we aren't talking about the economy, we're not talking about housing, she was chosen to reform, who is she going to reform?"

"The Democrat Party, the Republican Party, even an independent," McCain said, appearing somewhat frustrated, "She'll reform all of Washington." "How? What will she do," Walters appearing somewhat exasperated said. "What is she going to reform specifically, senator?" McCain said Palin had a strong record on vetoing earmark spending. "The fact is she was a reform governor, she took on an incumbent governor of her own party and defeated him. She sold the airplane and fired the chef –" he began. "She sold the airplane at a loss," an unrelenting Walters interrupted.

McCain was later pressed on the increasingly derisive tone of the campaign, and his new television commercial that carries the widely discredited claim Obama supported comprehensive sex education of kindergarteners as an Illinois state senator....

Sen. John McCain was a guest on 'The View' Friday.

32. Elizabeth Hasselbeck is outnumbered on the show this election cycle.
There is Whoopi Goldberg and Joy Behar, both very left-leaning, and obviously will be voting for Obama.

The other African-American female, Sherri Shepard, while a possible member of the flat-earth society, is likely voting for Obama this year and she has stated that.

The only full-blown Repub on the show is Elizabeth Hasselbeck, who replaced Lisa Ling after Ling left to do REAL journalism.

Compare Lisa Ling to Elizabeth Hasselbeck and it's a laugher. Ling completely destroys her.

5. Was doesn't anyone point out how childish and vindictive he sounds
when he blames Obama for the tone his campaign has taken?

"McCain was later pressed on the increasingly derisive tone of the campaign, and his new television commercial that carries the widely discredited claim Obama supported comprehensive sex education of kindergarteners as an Illinois state senator.

McCain defended the ad’s claims, as well as those of a Web ad that said Obama’s “Lipstick on a Pig” comments were directed at Palin. He added that if Obama had agreed to a series of townhalls he’d proposed, the tone of the campaign might have been more amicable."

He is saying, "It's not my fault, he made me do it!" Most parents wouldn't let that fly if their 6 year old said it. Is that the level of maturity a president should have?

30. You have to keep in mind.....
that our level of expectations regarding maturity and intelligence of our leaders has been thrown out the window in the last 8 years. If enough people re-elected Dimwit in Chief Bush then there aren't enough of us out there who care about who we have for our leaders.

37. Actually,...
The airplane in question is a 1984 IAI Westwind II. Since it's 14 years old, it's value doesn't change too much except in response to the used airplane market. It's not really a jet that's in demand, and therefore can be bought at a relative bargain. Typically they sell for around 2 million, give or take.

It could be quite possible that the previous administration in Alaska bought the airplane at an inflated price...I think it today's market, it would be hard to sell a typical Westwind for nearly 3 million.

47. I wasn't commenting on her truthfulness
I was commenting on someone else claiming that the airplane would lose value because it's used. Biz jets aren't cars.

In any case, I think the airplane issue is a political herring. There's plenty of other reasons to not vote for Palin as VP, such as her viewpoints. Whether she made or lost money on an airplane, who cares. If I was running an organization such as a US state, I'd probably only be partially involved in selling an asset like a business jet. She likely made the decision to sell it, and then left it to someone else to take care of. As far as claiming this or that about it, who cares. She probably didn't know much detail about the sale other than it sold. Issues like this only serve to make our political process look petty.

Bottom line, ask yourself if you agree with her or McCain philosophically. If the answer is no, then there's your reason to vote for someone else. You can bet that the other side will dig up all sorts of other idiotic "issues" claiming that Obama or Biden "lied" or "didn't know", when it's more likely that they were only minimally engaged in the issue. You and I both know that when they bring up those "issues", it seems childish and pointless. So try to not do as they do, if you know what I mean.

I guess I'm just tired of "politics as usual" here in the US. They are ALL politicians, regardless of who I vote for in any election, none of them are saints ready to bring salvation on our country...they are politicians and if you convince yourself otherwise you're going to be disappointed. I vote for who I think can do the better job, and that's all.

14. He just keeps clinging to the same lines: sold airplane, fired chef, reformer, took
on governor of own party and defeated him, blah blah--none of that is an accomplishment. Winning an election just means you won an election, it doesn't mean you achieved something for your constituents. What else IS there to this woman? Aren't Alaskans feeling a little stupid right now?

17. "downright misleading" ... "widely discredited claim" ...

The whores at CNN just cant bring themselves to call McCain what he is... a LIAR.

This is why I canceled my cable tv years ago...

The major cable 'news' channels let the Republicans lie with impunity.. then he goes on a lightweight afternoon show and gets called out on his lies and.. and ...

Cable news is shocked.. shocked I tell ya!

It seems that McCain just may have been "downright misleading" ... and one of his ads has a "widely discredited claim".

What a bunch of media whores and Republican shills.

20. The plane was mostly used to transport prisoners "Outside"
Like many states, due to overcrowding, Alaska places some inmates in private4ly run prisons elsewhere. The job of taking the prisoners there is now done by Federal marshals. One wonders if Alaska is paying for this service, or if Palin has managed to shift the cost onto taxpayers nationwide.

Edited on Sat Sep-13-08 11:05 AM by seabeckind
but the things he says and the way he says them are really insulting. The one exchange that sticks in my mind and really bothers me was his blather about "In God We Trust" (IGWT) that latest BS we have to put up with on license plates.

Anyway, he said something like the founding fathers wanted this to be a christian nation and so established IGWT. Actually it first appeared on money around civil war time and became the "national" motto in 1956 (course you can't believe that liberal wikipedia).

The fact that he said that gives me pause cause as I see it there're only 2 possibilities:

1. He knows it's not true and says it for some unknown (hah!, more unspecified) reason.

2. He doesn't know it.

In 1 he's a liar and dishonorable. In 2 he's uneducated in civics and is a senator and should know. In either case he doesn't belong in the white house unless he's delivering the repub xmas present to the obamas.

(edit: correction cause of grammar obsession)

Though hopefully the campaign is changing directions.

McCain was exposed for the idiotic, senile piece of shit that he is when he was called out FOR BLATANT, VERIFIABLE LIES. The "respectable" press could nail the living shit out of him for these things; all they have to do IS CHECK OFFICIAL RECORDS FOR CHRIST'S SAKE. You could bet your fucking life that they would be checking records and nailing the shit out of Obama on these same things if they could. McCain's so used to the corporate press who never ask him ANY tough questions that he crumbles when he gets a question that is 15% as tough as the softest questions tossed out at the Democrats. This guy is a fucking joke.
