Newsweek Poll: Race a Tie, McCain Gains on Some Issues
Source: CQPolitics

Barack Obama and John McCain are tied at 46 percent each with 8 percent undecided in a Newsweek poll conducted Sept. 10-11. The margin of error is 3.8 percent. They run evenly among independents. Obama had led by 3 points in this poll in July. A little ominously for Obama, 77 percent of former Hillary Clinton supporters are supporting him, but 16 percent say they will back McCain. The survey also shows McCain gains on the issues of the economy, energy and Iraq.

McCain leads among white voters by 55 percent to 37 percent. White evangelicals and white Catholics back McCain by margins of 47 percent and 26 percent respectively. Obama leads among non-whites by 75 percent to 17 percent.

The most important factor in the campaign for Obama supporters is ability to bring about change followed by his positions on the issues. For McCain backers, three factors rank about equally - positions on the issues, experience and leadership. Voters overall say by 51 percent to 27 percent that Obama is the more likely to bring change.

1. When canvassing I talked with a woman today
who said that now that Palin is on the ticket she's going to vote McCain. She would have voted for Hillary. I told her that on issues Barack and Hillary had a lot in common during the primaries. She said that that would be persuasive if she focused on issues, but she doesn't. She thinks that we need more women in government.

You know, that is just breathtaking. I don't even know what the Hell you say to that kind of disconnect.

Freedom? Constitution? Civil Liberty? Rights? Rule Of Law?

It's just SO HARD! Who can be bothered with that stuff?

Best to keep it mindless and simple.

Issues? I just can't be bothered with trivial stuff like that. It's not like we have the greatest Criminal Cabal running the country since the Nazis or something outrageous like that.

I have to get back to American Idol and the things that really affect ME!

:sarcasm:

23. Some people are just too dumb to spend time talking with
Seriously, nothing I could possibly say to this woman could have made her change her mind. That's because she doesn't use her mind.

4. Distraction
They effectively took the spotlight away from real issues by turning the campaign into the Palin show. Some people have short memories and it needs to be hammered home just how clueless McCain is.

3. Easily Explained
Either the poll, foreshadowing the election to come, is rigged.(Depressing possibility); or else 46% of the voting public are ignorant fools. (Embarrassing possibility)

10. I Fear You're Right.....
...but I hope you're wrong. I'll withhold final judgment until after the debates. If they're not somehow rigged (granted, a big "if"), they should be embarrassingly disastrous for McCain/Palin. Enough, maybe, to convince even the most dimwitted voter to switch to Obama.

6. McCain/Obama Race
How depressing. While I am not at any way in the panic mod yet, I keep asking myself how $*&@*% stupid can the American public be? I live in north Florida and can't believe some of the idiots that send letters to the editor saying why they'll vote for the McCain/Palin ticket over Obama. It is a free country, but come on. Are these people that ignorant that they can't see how out of touch McCain is and how totally inexperienced Ms. Moosehunter is. I asked a couple of friends of mine who are Republicans how they feel about Palin joining the ticket and it is if McCain brought a superstar on to the ticket. These two people are both college grads, professionals and they just don't get it. I guess that is what Obama is up against. These people would never vote for Obama even if Hitler was his opponent. I see similar posts on other website and in other papers with ringing endorsements of that ticket. It makes me sick with everything that has happened in the last seven years with the Republicans in charge that people will still follow them again even with everything being in the proverbial crapper (the economy, ignoring the Constitution, America's total lack of respect in the world, no health care for millions, gas prices, housing, etc.). Do they really think McCain is going to be different than Bush or sadly if he was to pass, that Palin can do the job. It makes me even angrier that Hillary supporters would vote for McCain because they felt Hillary was wronged. She and Obama were a lot closer on what they were going to bring to the table than McCain. Think about the Supreme Court and what could happen with McCain in charge or even Palin for that matter. Goodbye Roe vs. Wade, etc. Just think long and hard about what the ramifications would be.

7. If you believe McCain can win on the economy, you need to take a long rest.
Edited on Sat Sep-13-08 04:13 PM by KCabotDullesMarxIII
As a matter of fact, that "poll" was very predictable, after Obama drew attention to the fact that they were obliged to make "ad hominem" attacks, because they had no policies to take take the country forward - just more of the same. What could they do? Nothing honest.

22. Can 61 million americans be that dumb?
Remember that headline from the 04 election? The actual number is probably closer to half the country. This is a popularity contest not an election. Most Americans don't have a clue what's going on.
