Bush*s Jet Aborts Landing
ABOARD AIR FORCE ONE, Feb. 5 — President Bush avoids most of the inconveniences that plague ordinary air travelers, like delays, lines and baggage searches. But on Thursday he got a taste of one: an aborted landing approach.

In early afternoon, returning from South Carolina, the pilot of Air Force One was forced by a vehicle on the runway at Andrews Air Force Base to pull up and circle for a second effort to land the president's plane.

The Air Force said it was "routine," and it certainly felt that way. Reporters in the back of the plane barely noticed.

But given the security that surrounds the president's comings and goings, it was a highly unusual event, especially on a clear day.

2. Pilots Routinely Abort If The Runway Is Obstructed For Any Reason!
Sounds like the AF pilot followed procedures to a tee.

3. they're just pulling the same crap they did on 9-11...
"Our brave leader fearlessly faced a very unusual and dangerous situation while in Air Force One - they perfomed a 'go-around.'"

4. A favorite scenario in the "sim"
You are at 200 feet on a tight ILS approach. The runway is in sight and you are in perfect position to land, on profile at "Bug plus ten." At 100 feet a fuel truck starts across the runway ahead of you. At 140 knots, you know you will meet up on the runway.

GO AROUND. FLAPS 5. POSITIVE RATE. GEAR UP

Charlotte Tower, Piedmont 123 is going around.

Roger, Piedmont. Turn right to 090 and climb to 5000.

FLAPS UP, AFTER TAKEOFF CHECKLIST.

No big deal. Just an everyday thing at the airport. Any airport.

5. I was once on a plane going into St. Louis that had to abort
the landing. We were probably no more than 500' when the pilot hit the engines hard and pulled the nose up. As we were doing the go around he announced that another plane had pulled onto the runway right in front of us and that "we would have arrived at the same place at the same time" as the other plane.

Its a wierd feeling.

6. The plane I was in was had landed and was taxiing toward the gate
Edited on Fri Feb-06-04 09:14 AM by rocknation
When the pilot had to slam on the brakes. He explained, not a little testily, that there was already a plane in the gate he'd been directed to.

:hi: Hi, DemoTex!
