Palin's Favorability Ratings Begin to Falter
Source: Newsweek

To know her, it seems, is not necessarily to love her.

When John McCain picked Sarah Palin as his running mate late last month, the Alaska governor quickly became a media phenomenon. Largely unknown, she existed at first in something of an information vacuum, and due to the shock of her selection--everyone loves a surprise--the press rushed to fill the void with whatever data was easily available. Mostly this consisted of human interest material; Palin had plenty to go around. Mooseburgers. Float planes. Ice Fishing. Beauty pageants. Teen pregnancy. Et cetera. By the end of her first 15 minutes in the spotlight--which included her speech at the Republican National Convention in St. Paul--Palin existed mostly as an idea: a frontier supermom who'd triumphed over adversity (the Ol' Boys Club, the "liberal media"). Palin spent her first week reading from a teleprompter and avoiding questions from the press--and the public--so as not to sully this first impression.

The polls reflected the early success of her strategy. In the three days after Palin joined Team McCain--Aug. 29-31--32 percent of voters told the pollsters at Diageo/Hotline that they had a favorable opinion of her; most (48 percent) didn't know enough to say. By Sept. 4, however, 43 percent of Diageo/Hotline respondents approved of Palin with only 25 percent disapproving--an 18-point split. Apparently, voters were liking what they were hearing. Four days later, Palin's approval rating had climbed to 47 percent (+17), and by Sept. 13 it had hit 52 percent. The gap at that point between her favorable and unfavorable numbers--22 percent--was larger than either McCain's (+20) or Obama's (+13).

But then a funny thing happened: Palin lost some of her luster. Since Sept. 13, Palin's unfavorables have climbed from 30 percent to 36 percent. Meanwhile, her favorables have slipped from 52 percent to 48 percent. That's a three-day net swing of -10 points, and it leaves her in the Sept. 15 Diageo/Hotline tracking poll with the smallest favorability split (+10) of any of the Final Four. Over the course of a single weekend, in other words, Palin went from being the most popular White House hopeful to the least.

What happened? I'd argue that Palin's considerable novelty is starting to wear off. In part it's the result of a steady stream of unhelpful stories: her unfamiliarity with the Bush Doctrine during last Thursday's interview with Charles Gibson (video above); her refusal to cooperate with the Troopergate investigation; her repeated stretching of the truth on everything from earmarks to the Bridge to Nowhere to the amount of energy her state produces. That stuff has a way of inspiring disapproval and eroding one's support. (Interestingly, Palin's preparedness numbers--about 50 percent yes, 45 percent no--haven't budged.) But mostly it's the start of an inevitable process. Between now and Nov. 4, voters will stop seeing Palin as a fascinating story and starting taking her measure as an actual candidate for office. Some will approve; some won't. It remains to be seen whether Palin's recent slide will continue, or hurt John McCain in the polls. But it's hard to argue that the journey from intriguing new superstar to earthbound politician--a necessary part of the process--doesn't involve a loss of altitude

52. Admiral Stockdale was more suited than Sarah Palin
Look, just because he didn't know where he was at the vice presidential debate is no reason to be against the guy or anything. After all, Ronald Reagan didn't know where HE was between 1986 and 1989, and he was president of the United States. (And that was a philosophical question anyway...)

Don't dis Admiral Stockdale, man...this guy was the real deal. He mutilated himself so his captors wouldn't put him in propaganda photos. He almost killed himself by slashing his wrists to prove to his captors he'd rather die than give in to their tortures. (After he did it, they quit torturing prisoners altogether.) James Bond Stockdale is the only three-star admiral in the history of the Navy to wear both aviator's wings and the Medal of Honor.

7. There's video from a rally where McLame, standing next to Cindy, calls Palin his "soul mate."
I swear, the earth's temperature dropped about 10 degrees from the look on Cindy's face.

Cindy might have access to Beer Heiress Money, but Sarah has access to Oil Company Money, and he's "traded up" a wife before.

Cindy no happy - bad medicine.

She would've left the minute that misogynist pig called her the "C" word. Most self-respecting women (especially with $$$) would've, anyway.

But you're right about watching the three of them together. Cindy always looks like the 5th wheel, McPain and Failin look like the couple.

Sometimes, we women are the ultimate enablers: to this day, I don't get why Cindy would stay with him. He had an affair with that Vicky chick (the lobbiest) which undoubtedly wasn't the first time he stepped out on her. Didn't she make him sign a pre-nup???

20. To a "normal" person, the possibility/likelihood of suddenly going from
what was once a largely ceremonial job to POTUS, would frighten them; or at least be a matter of DEEP concern. They'd approach it with at least initial humility. But to a whacked out "fundie", it would be the fulfillment of biblical prophecy, and not a DROP of "humility"!

Myself, I'm not all that worried. She "peaked" way too early and will NOT be an "October Surprise", with effects lasting till Election Day. She is NOT "dropping like a stone" as some her claim. But she's dropping PERCEPTIBLY each day. And since she's so totally lacking in "substance", she'll be a JOKE to the voters in a few weeks.

9. The "brutal" ad
Of all the things that have come out about her I think the one thing that disturbed me the most was that ad put out by Wildlife Defenders. It made her look like a sheer monster. The wolves looked like dogs. They didn't look menacing.

We need more ads like that.

with my own personalized note, signed ME! (Also tacked on a very eloquent LTTE from today's Times about Palin's warped notion of 'sport').

As Lee Atwater might suggest, why not make dead dogs Palin's running mates? If 'independents' refuse to use their rational faculties in weighing the issues, well, that's a shame, but there are also opportunities in that we can't risk overlooking. Ads like this that inflame the emotions could be devastating to her image. Meet 'em at their level!

"Power, money, persuasion, supplication, persecution--these can lift at a colossal humbug--push it a little--weaken it a little, century by century, but only laughter can blow it to rags and atoms at a blast. Against the assault of laughter, nothing can stand."
Mark Twain, The Mysterious Stranger <1922>, ch10

61. That luster is nothing more than cheap gloss. She's nothing.
Nada. Nobody. Once she and McAnus lose this election nobody will remember who the hell she is; she'll be relegated to the answer to a game show question.

but after a fun romp some dirty talk and lies, he is feeling trapped like a P.O.W.;
No a wolf... or coyote, and he is wishing he were brave enough to gnaw his arm off to get away.

76. face scratches
Did anyone say what the scratches on McCain's face, very obvious in yesterday's videos, are? Does Cindy have long fingernails? Why is her face always in the background, with that sickly smile frozen on it? Inquiring minds want to know.

80. Beware my friends.
Crush her? Yes.

But be factual.

After all in 2-3 weeks she will be dropping off the ticket "for the good of America, the party, and John McCain the war hero."

Her speech will be something like:

"The presidency is too important to allow the Democrat party to make this elecetion about personality, and it is too important for me to allow myself to get in the way of keeping Amerika safe"

It will be a rousing speech of phoney humility invoking god and country and fake pathos. It will be almost unassailable. She will break down in tears sometime about two thirds of the way through only to recover later.

It will be important to minimize personal attacks and family attacks and be ready with counter spin after she drops.

John McCain will then tap Mittens or T-Paw to be VP. He will laugh at the conserv-engelicals who will vote for him because Sara says he is good. He will also laugh at whatever leftover Pumas (and anyone they can persuade) when they offer up their votes against the 'evil men' in the Democratic party. He will laugh at the American people for getting suckered.

The economy is the drum. The working class is the drum. The War is the drum. Corruption is the drum. Pound the ever living shit out of it.

82. The BUBBLE bursts but the BAGGAGE remains
To say that Palin peaked too soon would be an understatement. Given what people did not know about her (and are just now figuring out), there was no place to go but down. So much for the McCain campaign's "thorough vetting process">

is she got her first passport last year!

I love that kind of wordly experience, in my potential leader of the free world.
