Associated Press

MOSCOW - An explosion rocked the Moscow metro on Friday, causing casualties, the Interfax news agency reported, citing emergency officials.

The Emergency Situations Ministry said it had no immediate information.

Interfax said that the explosion occurred in the second wagon of a train as it left the Paveletskaya station near the center of the Russian capital. Smoke had filled the tunnel, Interfax reported.

The Russian capital has been on alert for terrorist attacks following a series of suicide bombings that officials have blamed on the war in Chechnya.

MOSCOW (AP) — An explosion hit the Moscow metro during rush hour Friday morning, sending clouds of smoke through the tunnel and killing at least 22 people and wounding 30, the Emergency Situations Ministry said.
A severe fire broke out in the underground train and passengers were being evacuated from Avtozavodskaya station, ministry spokesman Viktor Beltsov said.

3. Why hasn't this been getting more attention here?
Seems to be pretty big news but it's already on page 2! I'll start it off by raising the question - is it just a matter of time before these types of attacks spread over to the U.S.? I personally don't know, but constantly wonder what has stopped it so far.

4. There just doesn't seem to be much interest at DU
in discussing or even acknowledging Islamist terror. 40+ slaughtered, 130+ maimed and injured and most of the compassionate side of the political spectrum (at least as represented at DU) can't be bothered to so much as comment.

You want something interesting to watch in the coming days? Watch Russia's reaction. Compare it to Israel's reaction so similar slaughters. Then compare the world's reactions to the reactions. Should be quite illuminating.

The news broke late last night/early this morning and was burried because most DUers were sleeping? It happens ya know...

You might recall quite a lot of interest in the Russian theatre hostage situation, which was perpetrated by Chechan terrorists, so you're analogy isn't that secure...

6. It's a huge story
That has been on the news constantly. It was kicked by another DUer an hour ago and got no reaction. I acknowledge that some DUers may have missed it. I also know that discussion of such stories (which are generally sent down to the I/P dungeon since they generally involve the murder of Israelis) leads to some conclusions that people would rather not draw. Do you really believe that if Russians purposely had slaughtered scores of Chechen civilians, and injured and maimed over 100 more, this story would have gone 10+ hours without comment?

7. I agree it should have gotten more discussion on DU
but like I said, the story probably got lost in the middle of the night. The story was reposted at least once in LBN and was locked as a dupe, and it's unfortunate this thread wasn't revived at that time :-(

11. That premise fails if...
..you assume that the terrorism perpetrated on the USA was part and parcel of a group interested in suspending our constitution.
The Duma is already talking about declaring a 'State of Emergency' in Russia.
