Hurricane Ike: Survivors forced out of homes so clean up can begin
Source: Telegraph

At least 250 people who survivied Hurricane Ike on a coastal sliver of land face being forced out of their homes so crews can begin the recovery effort.

The massive storm has been blamed for the deaths of 48 people since hitting the US Gulf Coast over the weekend. It stranded more than 30,000 evacuees in shelters and left about 2 million Texans without power.

Areas such as the resort barrier island of Bolivar Peninsula, just east of Galveston, were almost completely wiped out. The remaining homes on the island lack power, water and gas.

Authorities have now said that residents who remained on the island during the storm, known as 'holdouts' there will be required to leave in the next few days so crews could begin the recovery effort...>

1. No one would have to talk me into leaving that mess.
That lady might enjoy a clean hotel room with a shower and other basic amenities.

8. The question
The question really is, where do you go, not do you leave.

I think we really need to reexamine whether people should live in such vulnerable areas. But I suppose if they've got the money, then what the heck.

9. The question really is:if you have means to stay, should you be forced to leave?
If you have means, food, water, meds, etc, and want to stay, at what point does your choice to stay or go not become your choice?

3. What arrangements are being made for those who have no home to return to?
Edited on Wed Sep-17-08 09:40 AM by Dover
Beyond temporary shelters, what is being done about the longer term issues confronting people?
They are in limbo, many not even knowing the fate of their homes, so they can assess their
individual situation. Where are all the homeless from these natural disasters going?
There must be tens of thousands if one looks at the cumulative toll of Katrina, Rita, Mid-west Floods, Gustav, Ike, etc.).

And what, if ANY, media sources are doing that kind of followup story on this massive dislocation event?

10. This is when ...
... the rumours about REX-84 (and friends) start to get traction ...

Not that anyone would think that the US administration is capable
of doing such a thing ... any more than it would end up with yet
another senile old man in charge helped by a VP with serious
agenda issues ...

6. This does not make sense
I camped with my sis after katrina in her front yard in ocean springs ms. The shell of the house was standing and we gutted the rest and bleached it out. There was no power or potable water etc. As long as the roads are open for people to leave and get supplies, I don't know why they are being made to leave. Give the people a few portapottys and leave them alone if they want to stay.

7. The bridge was damaged.
Getting in and out of the peninsula is difficult, mostly by boat; a temp. bridge is to be in place in a few weeks. Any vehicles there for Ike are inoperable.

Also, no working sewers.
