Ohio Jobless Rate Jumps To 7.4 Percent In August
Source: AP

POSTED: 6:00 pm EDT September 19, 2008
UPDATED: 6:01 pm EDT September 19, 2008

Stung by job losses in manufacturing, Ohio's unemployment rate jumped to 7.4 percent in August, up from 7.2 percent the month before and the highest rate in 16 years, the state reported Friday.

More people are out of work in businesses that make cars, refrigerators, furniture and other durable goods. Employment in the construction industry was also down.

The figures released by the Ohio Department of Job and Family Services show that the number of unemployed workers in August was 445,000, up from 432,000 in July. The number of unemployed people has increased by 106,000 in the past 12 months.

"The big thing driving the losses statewide has been manufacturing," said George Zeller, a Cleveland-based economic research analyst. "It would certainly help if we get a recovery in the auto industry."

The August unemployment rate is up from the 5.7 percent rate a year earlier, topped the national rate of 6.1 percent, and matched the Ohio's 7.4 rate in October 1992.

"It's not good news, but it is consistent with what we've seen earlier this year," said Cory Eckel, regional vice president for Adecco, a staffing agency. "We're hearing from our clients that the automotive industry is slowing everything down."

5. I don't think...

..the poster meant for you to take it personally. The state has either gone or been stolen by republicans for a while, so there is a collective "they."

22. I hope they got all their voting machines sorted out
They've had four years to fix the voting problems....I think that's the only way McCain could win Ohio these days....if the machines are rigged.

6. I will say it right now: We can't win Ohio or Florida. They are fixed.
But if we win Michigan, Wisconsin, and Pennsylvania, we will win this election, despite Rove permanently putting the mechanisms in place to assure Ohio and Florida.

Gore won Florida in 2000, and Kerry won Ohio in 2004. Period. But they - and we - were robbed.

17. Ohio and Florida are fixed? Nonsense.
Rove doesn't have any "permanent mechanisms" in place anywhere.

Ohio was very blue in '06. I think it will be again.

People have to stop this "...but, but Karl Rove..." nonsense. As much as he might like us to think it, Karl Rove does not rule the universe.

27. FL yes, OH no. They're run by DEMS, I don't worry about them having a generally fair contest
FL though, sheesh... talk about rethug control... even our DEM leaders are weak GOPers and ass-kissers.

8. S.C. Jobless Rate Highest Since '93
Unemployment Benefits Draining Trust Funds

The August unemployment rate comes immediately after a record-setting jump in July, when 7.0 percent of the state's 2.2 million workers were out of a job.

More than 165,000 South Carolina workers are unemployed, an increase of about 14,000 over July.

Us blue county dwellers can only do so much. We still have 65 counties that are staunchly blood red and probably 8-10 pink ones.

19. He's not ahead in every poll. He's behind or tied in some.
Still, he's way too close for my liking. I pray my home state doesn't embarrass me anymore. I know '04 was stolen, but it couldn't have been stolen had it not been close. I don't know why it's close.

24. It was hard to believe they would vote for Bush in 2004 but they did
Yeah, there might have been some voting irregularities but still a lot of stupid assholes went to the poll to vote for W.

26. That "7.4%" doesn't take into account underemployed or allegedly "discouraged" workers
The BLS isn't a user friendly statistics source, but national averages from 2006 suggest, that if one includes under-employed folk (who haven't actively chosen to be under-employed) and "discouraged" jobseekers, the rarte should go up by about 25%

So 7.4% unemployed in Ohio really means something like 9.25% of the labor force isn't as fully employed as they'd want
