Authorities seize 'drug sub' off Mexican coast
Source: KGBT

The U.S. Coast Guard says it intercepted a submarine-like vessel carrying seven tons of cocaine off Central America's coast.

The Coast Guard says a U.S. Navy aircraft spotted the 60-foot vessel Wednesday about 400 miles south of the Mexico-Guatemala border.

The Coast Guard sank the vessel after determining it was too unstable to be towed to port.

The Coast Guard's statement Friday did not say if anyone was arrested. Officials didn't immediately return calls seeking comment.

1. Why don't they just go into business making recreational consumer submarines?
Isn't that less risky than using subs to smuggle drugs?

2. well, Colombians won't be able to buy subs they have to export them
Edited on Mon Sep-22-08 11:17 AM by AlphaCentauri
and you know they can make more money in a single trip north, than selling subs in a year

3. Sure, but if they'd use this engineering know-how legally, they'd stay out of jail.

Alternatively, why don't they use remotely controlled UNMANNED subs, so that if they get caught, there's nobody to arrest?

4. So, what did they do with the seven tons of cocaine?
That's a lot of weight to transfer, and then how do they destroy that much? They certainly couldn't have sunk it with the sub.

7. 400 miles south of the Mexico-Guatemala border is not the Mexican coast
Not by a long shot.

Just so we're clear on this.

11. How do they measure 7 tons of cocaine under water in an unstable sub?
Don't they have to take it out to measure it?

12. They offload it.
The subs actually use the drugs as ballast to help stabilize the vessel. When the CG grabs one and offloads the cargo, the boat rises high in the water and becomes unstable. One of the semi-subs was accidentally sunk by the CG recently while they were still unloading the drugs inside (and with CG crew onboard). With most of its ballast missing, the boat rolled to one side and water began pouring in through vents. The Coast Guard crew scrambled off the boat just before it went down.

14. Yet another bailout!
Nobody's thinking about this clearly yet.

With the economy in the tank, there's one other group we have to bail out.... bigtime drug kingpins.

Folks just aren't going to have the money for their usual recreational drugs, and the cartels are going to hurt... maybe even fail.

The ultimate entrepreneurs can't be allowed to fail.

Shit, we're bailing out all the other fat cats.

Besides, what's a few more billions?

17. Does anyone know who builds these subs? Custom built? If more stable, they
might be used by Blackwater. They would put Rice in charge of a well rounded military unit. U.S. Forces - Defense. Mercenary military in the black - State.
