(Senate Majority Leader Harry) Reid: We will not 'rubber stamp' bailout bill
Edited on Mon Sep-22-08 02:44 PM by sabra
Source: Politico

Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid issued a warning to the White House Monday, saying Congress will not “rubber stamp” a proposed $700 billion bailout proposal because of pressure from the administration.

“We are prepared to do what is necessary to avoid {an economic crisis} — but we will not let haste abandon good judgment in the process,” Reid said in a statement. “The Bush administration has called on Congress to rubber stamp its bailout legislation without serious debate or efforts to improve it. That will not happen.

“The legislation sent to Congress by the Treasury Department recognizes the scope of the crisis the Bush administration created, a view that we share with {Treasury} Secretary {Henry} Paulson. But the Bush administration’s bill is a starting point; by no means the final product.

1. Reid: We will not rubber stamp the bailout. We'll use a pen.
Is that what you meant Harry?

Because dear Harry, if you're ever going to stand up to them, THIS would be the fucking time!!

mortgage assistance from a bankruptcy judge to help keep their second, third, fourth, fifth, sixth or even seventh home — but working families cannot seek mortgage relief from a bankruptcy judge for their first and only home — their primary residence."

It's difficult to conceive of such wickedness, isn't it? In Austria, which is not noted for its left-wing proclivities, it is illegal to possess more than one dwelling. In the UK, young people have to move away from villages their families have lived in for centuries, because so many dwellings have been bought up, as second homes, by interlopers.

I think Bush, Paulson et al realised they didn't have a leg to stand, on so they adopted a stance based on the precept that the best form of defence is attack. Some of the despotic licence Paulson sought beggared belief even from them.

15. Here is my letter to my congressman (Bilbray, R)
Representative Bilbray

I am writing you to express my outrage at the support the congress is giving to this bailout plan. Specifically, I have issue with Section 8 granting the Executive (through the treasury) unchecked power in decisions on fiscal action "Decisions by the Secretary pursuant to the authority of this Act are non-reviewable and committed to agency discretion, and may not be reviewed by any court of law or any administrative agency.". I am writing you to ask you to oppose this bail out for Wall Street. Let them collapse and absorb their own debt. The taxpayers should not have to pay for their gamble.

16. They rubber stamped PATRIOT and the military tribunals
and many of them voted for the bankruptcy "reform" bill that has done more harm than good. I will be surprised if these guys do anything other than cosmetic changes to Paulsen's proposal.

17. Earth to Harry and Nancy ...

You guys do realize that you more or less control what legislation comes to the floor right??? There is no rubber stamping. You get to write the bills and the President has the rubber stamp.
